  • Acid phosphatase locus 1 (ACP1): Possible relationship of allelic variation to body size and human population adaptation to thermal stress?A theoretical perspective

Open Access•Lawrence S Greene, Nunzio Bottini et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2000

The acid phosphatase locus 1 (ACP1) codes for a low molecular weight phosphotyrosine protein phosphatase that has the important action of dephosphorylating tyrosine phosphorylated proteins and peptides and a second important role in modulating flavin cofactor levels and the activity of flavo-enzymes. These functions significantly influence cell division, differentiation, and growth. Two alleles (ACP1*A and ACP1*B) reach polymorphic frequencies at…

  • G6PD deficiency, diet, and adaptation to malaria: A symposium held in Cortona, Italy on July 3,4,5 1995 under the Auspices of the Congress of the International Union of Anthropological and Ethnologica…

  • Co-evolution of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency and quinine taste sensitivity

    Open Access•Lawrence S Greene, L Mcmahon et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1993

We hypothesized that ‘quinine’ taste sensitivity functions to regulate the intake of bitter-tasting, naturally occurring antimalarial substances of plant origin, and that this genetic trait has co-evolved with the G6PD locus. This hypothesis was tested by evaluating taste sensitivity to quinine sulphate and sodium chloride among 17 G6PD-deficient and 25 G6PD-normal African American subjects 14–40 years of age. There was no significant difference …

  • G6PD deficiency as protection againstfalciparum malaria: An epidemiologic critique of population and experimental studies

    Open Access•Lawrence S Greene•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 55

Several recent reviews in the medical literature maintain that only heterozygous G6PD deficient females are relatively protected against falciparum malaria. However, a number of population studies provide compelling evidence that both the hemizygous G6PD deficient male and homozygous G6PD deficient female are also relatively protected against falciparum parasitization. An epidemiologic critique of a sample of these field investigations points out…

  • Social Responses During Severe Food Shortages and Famine [and Comments and Reply]

Robert Dirks, George J Armelagos et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1980•Cited by: 71

Although emergency food shortages and famines have been a prominent part of human experience for thousands of years and recur somewhere on our planet almost annually, data describing behavioral and organizational responses are few and scattered. Generalizations, when not speculative, tend to be vague and frequently contradictory. Practical, humanistic, and scientific concern with how people respond when overtaken by nutritional catastrophe provid…

    Open Access•Lawrence S Greene•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1974

PTC (phenylthiocarbamide) taste sensitivity was correlated with a measure of visual‐motor maturation in children six to 15 years of age in two Ecuadorian Andean communities in which goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland) and cretinism are endemic. The children in one population received injections of iodine in oil IM in 1966 while the children in the other population did not. The correlations between PTC taste sensitivity and visual‐motor matu…

    Open Access•Lawrence S Greene•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1973

Animal experiments indicate that chronic dietary iodine deficiency can have a marked effect on neurological maturation and the consequent behavioral capacities of the individuals so affected. Goiter, enlargement of the thyroid gland, is hyperendemic throughout the Andean region of Ecuador and is associated with an insufficient dietary intake of iodine. In these populations there is also a strikingly high prevalence of gross mental and physical de…
