    Marcia Herndon•ARTICLE•Yearbook for Traditional Music•1988

Music and dance serve to transmit visual, auditory, and symbolic indications of cultural identity. Within a society, the cultural performances of its particular named, identified groups create special kinds of temporal-spatial continua. Analysis of the positioning of, and support for, these groups through time within a given society reveals the type and degree of cultural engagement

  • Toward Evaluating Musical Change through Musical Potential

    Marcia Herndon•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1987

T his paper is frankly tentative, proposing that a combination of several previous ideas and approaches to musical change constitutes, with one addition, a framework for constructing rough topographies of the potential of musical systems for change. Topographies can give us a basis for not only diachronic but also cross-cultural musical comparison, while allowing maximum freedom in the description and analysis of particular music cultures

Norma Mcleod, Marcia Herndon•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•1975•Cited by: 1

IN THE MEDITERRANEAN, a general attitude toward the status of women may be discerned only if one accepts a normalized statement. Generally, virtue of women tends to be treasured and guarded, while sexual activity outside strict bounds is disdained. The nature of that disdain and its extent have not yet been fully investigated. Direct comments on the social position and status of women are absent from all our sources, as is discussion of women abe…

  • The Cherokee Ballgame Cycle: An Ethnomusicologist's View

    Marcia Herndon•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1971•Cited by: 4

A lthough the original task set before Dr. Fogelson and myself was a comparison of differences of approach when an ethnographer and an ethnomusicologist study the same phenomenon, we discovered that our basic methods and goals were almost identical. Our original points of focus and our theoretical stances were different, but the results of our respective work on the Cherokee ballgame cycle were much the same. This is not to say, however, that any…

    Marcia Herndon•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1974•Cited by: 2

n the relatively brief history of ethnomusicology, we have witnessed the promulgation of a wide array of methods for treating music. Most of these methods have received little discussion. It would seem that each has a discrete existence, unquestioningly accepted and passed along only to its creator's students. There are a few exceptions to this; however, for the most part, there has been little of the debate and disagreement which is the developm…
