  • Sound Change and the Structure of Synchronic Variability

    Khalil Iskarous, Darya Kavitskaya•ARTICLE•Language•2018

This article investigates the development of the palatalization contrast in Slavic from diachronic, synchronic, and phonetic perspectives. The diachrony of this contrast is an important test case for theories of the actuation of sound change, since the Slavic language family shows an impressive diversity in the realization of the original contrast, with Russian, for instance, preserving the contrast, Slovak maintaining it only for some consonants…

  • Compatible Dynamical Models of Environmental, Sensory, and Perceptual Systems

    Khalil Iskarous•ARTICLE•Ecological Psychology•2016

One of the cornerstones of the ecological stance in psychology is the compatibility, or symmetry, between animal and environment. In this article, it is argued that a first principles reevaluation of the dynamical systems that structure the information signals animals live through is an important step in understanding how compatibility is possible. What is especially important is how environmental properties are encoded by dynamical laws into the…

  • Speech Production and Perception

    Open Access•Carol A Fowler, Khalil Iskarous•OTHER•Handbook of Psychology, Second…•2012

The chapter provides an overview of speech production and perception by summarizing research findings and theories in four domains. We describe theories of “phonological competence” in linguistics that characterize what language users know about the sound systems and word forms of their language. Next we summarize research and explanations of “phonological planning” whereby language users intending to speak develop a plan for an utterance at the …

  • Vowel Production and Perception

    Open Access•D H Whalen, Harriet S Magen et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•2004•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 33

The ability of speakers to exaggerate speech sounds (“hyperarticulation”) has led to the theory that the targets themselves must be hyperarticulated. Johnson, Flemming, and Wright (1993) found that perceptual “best exemplar” choices for vowels were more extreme than listeners' own productions. Our first experiment, using their procedure, only partially replicated their results. Low vowels showed a higher F1, consistent with hyperspace. Front vowe…
