  • Openness to “Sugar Relationships” Reflects Personality and Emotional Vulnerabilities in a Representative Sample of Hungarian Women

Open Access•Norbert Mesko, Béla Birkás et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2026•References: 67

Openness to sugar relationships—arrangements in which companionship or sexual intimacy is exchanged for material benefits within loosely structured, mutually negotiated agreements—has garnered growing attention in psychological research. However, little is known about the underlying personality and emotion regulation patterns associated with such attitudes. In this preregistered study, we examined whether early maladaptive schemas (EMS), personal…

  • Changes in health behaviour of medical students during and after the Covid-19 pandemic—focus on physical activity, screen time, sleep duration, unhealthy foods, alcohol, and tobacco

Open Access•Lukas Liebig, Willy Gräfe et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic and the preventive measures led to a change in the health behaviour among the population. Medical students were particularly affected by this. Previous studies primarily focused on few health behaviours, were mostly conducted in 2020–2021, and did not assess the persistence of these behaviours post-pandemic. Methods A combined cross-sectional and longitudinal approach were applied to examine changes in physical …

  • Strategies for becoming a more desirable mate

Open Access•M Apostolou, Mark Sullman et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2024

The current research aimed to study the strategies that people employ in order to become more desirable as mates in different cultural settings. More specifically, using a closed‐ended questionnaire on a sample of 7181 participants from 14 different countries, we identified 10 different strategies that people employ to become more appealing as mates. Participants indicated that they had more frequently used the “Enhance looks,” followed by the “S…

  • The role of self-reported fear and disgust in the activation of behavioral harm avoidance related to medical settings

Open Access•Béla Birkás, Botond László Kiss et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

More knowledge and experiences, better perceived control together with reduced disgust and fear of pain can decrease the probability of avoiding medical situations. Implications to treatment are discussed. Results support the importance of targeting these contextual factors in prevention to increase the likelihood of people attending regular screenings or seeking medical care when needed

  • Negative time perspective predicts the self-perceived affective and physical components of pain independently from depression, anxiety, and early life circumstances

    Open Access•Eszter Simon, Andras N Zsido et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica•2022

People's attitudes toward time, the time perspectives (TPs) rooted in past experiences, might be crucial for the emotional evaluation of life events, such as painful situations. In a survey-based study (N = 353), we investigated the relationship of TPs with the self-perceived affective and physical aspects of pain. Specifically, we hypothesised that past-negative TP would be associated with a negative emotional appraisal of pain characterised by …

  • Pain catastrophizing, pain sensitivity and fear of pain are associated with early life environmental unpredictability

    Open Access•Eszter Simon, Andras N Zsido et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2022

The findings converged on the conclusion that individuals experiencing disadvantageous early life conditions tended to have an elevated level of pain catastrophizing, higher perceived sensitivity to pain, and higher level of pain-related fear. These associations were mediated by an unpredictability schema and body awareness

  • Why Hungarians Have Sex

    Open Access•Norbert Mesko, Andras N Zsido et al.•ARTICLE•Archives of Sexual Behavior•2022•References: 65

The present study developed a brief version of the Hungarian Why Sex? questionnaire (Meskó et al., 2022). The study was in part based on previously reported data obtained from several samples ( N = 6193; 1976 men, 4217 women). Using Mokken Scaling Procedure, Item Response Model and redundancy analysis indicated that retaining three summary scales comprising five items each was the optimal solution for the brief version. The validity of the brief …

These reasons were classified into 12 factors, including one’s perceived inability to find the right …

  • The Mediating Role of the Dark Triad Between Life History Strategy and Perceived Stress Factors

Open Access•Béla Birkás, Pátkai Gabriella et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2018

Life History Theory posits early-life adversities affect personality development partway through sensitizing individuals to certain environmental cues, thus influencing the person’s responses to different stressors. We therefore hypothesized that life history strategy affects perceived distress and self-efficiency in coping through certain personality traits. The concept of the Dark Triad describes specific forms of personalities found to be asso…

  • Self-Rated Attractiveness Moderates the Relationship Between Dark Personality Traits and Romantic Ideals in Women

Open Access•Béla Birkás, András Láng et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2017

Our study investigated the different mate preferences of the Dark Triad in women. In addition to former studies, we also examined the effect of self-evaluated attractiveness on these preferences. Attractiveness is a high-valued partner attribute, especially in short-term relationships. Accordingly, we predicted that women high in Dark Triad traits prefer characteristics related to short-term mating, because they possess traits favored in short-te…

  • Schizotypal Traits and the Dark Triad From an Ecological Perspective

Open Access•András Láng, Béla Birkás et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2017

The Dark Triad is a collection of socially aversive personality traits, namely subclinical psychopathy, Machiavellianism, and subclinical narcissism. These deviant traits, however, contribute to the success of individuals with dark personality traits. Therefore, Dark Triad traits can be conceived as pseudopathologies. Schizotypal traits have also been studies from the perspective of behavioral adaptations. In this study, we investigated whether s…

  • Machiavellianism and Parental Attachment in Adolescence

    Open Access•András Láng, Béla Birkás•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2015

Machiavellianism is a well-studied topic in several branches of psychology. Still, it has received little attention from a developmental perspective. Previous retrospective studies linked Machiavellianism to poor parental care, but actual reports of adolescents who live in their family of origin have been ignored so far. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between Machiavellianism and parental attachment in adolescence and possible sex di…
