Nutritional Assessment Based on Mid-upper Arm Circumference Among Tribal Preschool Children of Three Distinct Ecological Zones of India
Undernutrition among infants and children retards the physical and cognitive growth and increases susceptibility to infections and diseases. Educational attainment and productivity of children get adversely affected by undernutrition, NFHS (2019–2020) and IIPS (2021) found the prevalence of undernutrition indicators to be high among the under-five children of the nation and tribal children to be in a more vulnerable condition. Mean mid-upper arm …
Influences of Age, Sex and Raised Body Mass Index on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors Among Tribal Adults of India
Introduction. Rapid life style changes are leading causes of increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risks among people in India today. Despite the country’s high ethnic diversity, studies related to physiology and such health risks, particularly among the tribal populations have been limited. Materials and methods. The present cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,434 tribal participants belonging to six tribes from the two states of West B…
Validating mid-upper arm circumference (Muac) cut off points as an indicator of nutritional status among nine tribal populations of India
Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) is an alternative anthropometric measurement to assess undernutrition but a universally accepted cut-off is yet to be established. The objectives of the present study are to determine whether the proposed sex-specific global cut-offs are suitable across several tribes in India. This cross-sectional study was conducted among nine tribal populations in India (1046 males, 1087 females). Weight, height and MUAC valu…
Ethnic heterogeneity in body composition patterning and CVD risk factors: A multi-ethnic study of Asian Indian Tribes
Tribal subjects of Gujarat had higher CVD risks with significantly higher fat mass and lower muscle mass followed by the tribal subjects of Odisha, and West Bengal respectively. The younger generation are equally at risk as their older counterparts. The CVD risks are developing at a much faster rate resulting in a serious public health threat, even in traditional societies. Body composition measures could be considered as a better non-invasive te…
Genomic Heterogeneity of the Naga and Kuki Tribal Populations of Manipur, Northeast India
Manipur, one of the northeastern states of India, lies on the ancient silk route and serves as a meeting point between Southeast Asia and South Asia. The origin and migration histories of Naga and Kuki tribal populations are not clearly understood. Moreover, Kukis have been traced to two different ancestries, which has created confusion among the people. The present study examined genomic affinities and differentiation of the Naga and Kuki tribal…
Assessment of Nutritional Status and Body Composition in Tibetan Adolescent girls of Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh
Malnutrition among adolescents is an important public health issue in India. The aim of the present study was to assess nutritional status and body composition characteristics of adolescent girls and their interrelationships with physical activity and socioeconomic status (SES). Nutritional status and body composition characteristics were assessed in terms of body mass index (BMI), upper arm muscle area by height (UAMAH) and percent body fat (PBF…

Homogeneity of Maternal Perception of Her Child’s Weight in Northeastern Mexico
The objectives were to assess a maternal perception of her child’s weight through two tests, words, and images, to validate tests; and to compare perception among Mexican populations. Participants 2,842 mother– child dyads; the child’s body mass index measurement was the gold standard. Sensitivity, specificity, Kappa value, Z test and homogeneity of Kappas were calculated. By words found that 55.1%, 77.5%, 32.2% and 25.1% of mothers of underweigh…
Genomic congruence of Indo-European speaking tribes of western India with Dravidian-speaking populations of southern India: A study of 20 autosomal DNA markers
Average heterozygosity levels were high and degree of gene differentiation (G(ST) = 2%) was small, indicating that genetic drift may not have played a major role in bringing out a characteristic genetic differentiation in these groups. The genetic structure of the populations revealed that neither of these groups was overtly admixed nor completely isolated. Other analyses undertaken on the population affiliations revealed only a slight influence …

Genetic Affinities of the Siddis of South India: An Emigrant Population of East Africa
Historical records indicate that the Portuguese brought the African Siddis to Goa, India, as slaves about 500 years ago. Subsequently, the Siddis moved into the interior regions of the state of Karnataka, India, and have remained there ever since.
