Recognizing Indigenous Persistence by Dating Extensive Low-Density Indigenous Occupations across the AD 1480-1630 Radiocarbon Plateau in Wellfleet, Massachusetts
Archaeologists have relied on the presence of European material on Indigenous New England sites as the main indicator that a site was occupied during the sixteenth or early seventeenth centuries-a span often characterized as the Contact period. The AD 1480-1630 span is particularly difficult to sequence because it lies on a radiocarbon calibration plateau. Here we report on a program of AMS dating from an Indigenous site on Great Island on Cape C…
Differential deposition of bird body parts in domestic Viking Age middens in Iceland
Zooarcheological analysis shows that there is an overabundance of seabird wings recovered from Viking Age archeological sites in Iceland, especially when the rest of the body is considered. Cultural choices seem to be driving this differential. By comparing two species of alcids to ptarmigan, primarily recovered from domestic middens, the overabundance of specific bones suggests differences in bird butchery and use strategies. The data come from …

Archaeological Parasites as Indicators of Environmental Change in Urbanizing Landscapes
Using archaeological data of two human intestinal parasites from seventeenth- to early twentieth-century contexts, we explore the intersection of biological and cultural variables that shaped the ecology of cities in northeastern North America during the modern period. These parasites are useful because they require a developmental period in the soil, thus providing a link between human activities and changing environments. Prior to the last deca…
The Viking Age settlement pattern of Langholt, North Iceland
An archaeological survey of the Viking Age settlement pattern in the Langholt region of North Iceland suggests that being early in this sequence conferred tremendous advantages to the settlers of this previously uninhabited landscape. Many of the farms established during the settlement of Iceland (which began about a.d. 870) are in use today. However, accessing the Viking Age landscape is difficult. In Langholt the earliest layers of most farmste…
Continuity of Lithic Practice from the Eighteenth to the Nineteenth Centuries at the Nipmuc Homestead of Sarah Boston, Grafton, Massachusetts
Stone tools have been found at all Nipmuc-related house sites in central Massachusetts dating from the 17th through 20th centuries. This article explores in detail the lithic assemblage recovered from the kitchen midden of the late 18th and early 19th century Sarah Burnee/Sarah Boston farmstead in Grafton, Massachusetts. Quartz and quartzite lithics were found in similar concentrations as historic ceramics within the midden suggesting that these …

One-year Prediction of Violence Perpetration Among High-risk Youth
OBJECTIVE: Measures of drug use, law-abidance beliefs, sensation seeking, fear of victimization, high-risk group identification, self-protection needs and behaviors, and demographics were investigated as longitudinal predictors of violence perpetration among 870 high-risk adolescents. METHOD: Self-reports from the same youth were obtained 1-year apart. RESULTS: In addition tobaseline violence perpetration, marijuana use, relatively young age, mal…

The political economy of late Neolithic and early Bronze age society

Ploughzone sampling in Denmark
Are sites in lowland Europe destroyed when they are ploughed many times? In north Denmark, many Neolithic and Early Bronze Age sites are now reduced to just lithic scatters, but distinctive 'site signatures' persist. A lithic economic prehistory from the ploughsoil is possible and instructive
