    Open Access•Richard C Friedman•ARTICLE•Eidos A Journal for Philosophy of…•2025

Philosophy has traditionally been defined as the love of wisdom.Understanding the love of wisdom is crucial to Paul Cherlin's book John Dewey's Metaphysical Theory. 1 Cherlin's short but broad-ranging study offers a view of the nature and importance of philosophy, metaphysics, and of the difficult metaphysics of Dewey which Cherlin finds "deserves to be counted among the greatest metaphysical theories in the history of philosophy" (MT, vii).In th…

With the NPDES Phase II Final Rule taking effect, more municipalities are confronted with the requirement to develop, implement, and enforce a management plan to control post-construction stormwater runoff. The ultimate objective is to reduce pollutant loads and improve water quality. To accomplish this goal, many municipalities have adopted regulations that require all new and redeveloped areas to treat the “first flush” (first 1.2”) of rainfall…

    Open Access•Jennifer I Downey, Richard C Friedman•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•1998•Cited by: 4•References: 33

The psychoanalytic theory of female homosexuality occupies an unusual position in modern psychoanalytic thought because it continues to be influenced by models of the mind that have largely been discarded in other areas of psychoanalytic psychology. Psychoanalytic ideas regarding female homosexuality are considered here from an historical perspective. It is suggested that modern psychoanalytic theory about sexual orientation in women must include…

    Richard C Friedman, Arthur A Lilling•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1997•Cited by: 3

Eighty-eight clinical psychoanalysts responded to a questionnaire that assessed their theoretical beliefs about homosexuality. • Biology and the Oedipus Complex

    Richard C Friedman, Jennifer I Downey•ARTICLE•The Psychoanalytic Quarterly•1995•Cited by: 12•References: 25

Recent observations in the behavioral and neurosciences have raised questions about the ubiquity of the oedipus complex as well as about its significance for psychological development. The authors argue that the construct Freud called the oedipus complex in males is best examined in its component parts. One component--the incestuous wish--does not occur in all individuals. Another component--the boy's urge to engage competitively with other male …

The potential role of biological influences in human sexual orientation was considered more seriously during the early phases of psychoanalysis than in the years since World War II. Recently studies of homosexuality and heterosexuality in the neurosciences have attracted widespread attention both in the scientific and lay communities. The salience of these new data for psychoanalytic theory and practice is just beginning to be explored. In this a…

Nosology is discussed historically from Krafft-Ebing to the DSM-III-R category, self-defeating personality disorder. Masochistic character traits are conceptualized as attempts to cope with depressed helpless and hostile feelings that have become part of the core self-concept. Psychotherapeutic strategy for tr…
