Anthropological Approaches to Modern Societies in the 1940s
At the time that Julian Steward was formulating the Puerto Rico Project, several other approaches to complex societies were being pursued by American anthropologists. Beginning in the 1920s, funders'-and subsequently, New Deal agencies'-interest in addressing social problems impelled microcosmic community studies in the United States. That approach, essentially functionalist and ahistorical, was extended to village studies in other countries, and…
Introduction: The Puerto Rico Project: Reflections Sixty Years Later
In the late 1940s Julian Steward initiated a social anthropological study of Puerto Rico, carried out by a team working in a range of communities representing different ecological zones. The project was a landmark in anthropology but met with criticism from Puerto Rican scholars. The articles in this collection reconsider the Puerto Rico Project in terms of its place within the history of anthropology, its reception in Puerto Rico and elsewhere, …

American Anthropology in the Middle Decades: A View from Hollywood
North American anthropology had an earlier interest in studies of the United States and in critical approaches than is often recognized. Such interests were pursued before World War II but were set aside during the war and in anthropology's postwar expansion. This perspective on anthropological history was inspired by the work of Hortense Powdermaker, specifically the disjunction between her 1930s research in segregated Mississippi and her pionee…

Justice Joseph Story and Death in Early 19th-Century America
Justice Joseph Story, associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1811 until his death in 1845, suffered many losses during his lifetime. His first wife died a little more than one-half year after their marriage, and her death was followed a few months later by the death of Story's father. Five of his 7 children died. Other family members, friends, and colleagues died. Story was insightful and articulate in describing these losses. …

Towards a Political Economy of Italian Competitive Festivals
In Central Italy a recurrent feature of popular festivals is an event entailing competition among territorial or other divisions within the urban-centered polity. The Palio of Siena and the Ceri of Gubbio are of particular interest because they have historical continuity of several centuries and because they exhibit contrasting versions of the general pattern: competition in the Palio being among territorial units (contrade), while in the Ceri it…

The peasant concept in anthropology
The development of peasant studies in anthropology (focusing primarily on the United States) is reconsidered by tracing two major approaches, one stemming from Robert Redfield, the other from Julian Steward and his students. The two approaches are based on different premises and grounded in different theories of culture. Although they have been interwoven historically, they represent different conceptions of peasantry, as well as different unders…
On the Uses of History in Anthropology: The palio of Siena
To illustrate the potential of joining history and anthropology in the study of complex societies, a particular ritual complex is considered from three different theoretical viewpoints - all essentially ahistoric - and then analyzed from a historical perspective. Comparing various approaches to the Sienese palio suggests that history need not be limited to providing "background" or addressing questions of origin; it can be used by anthropologists…
