  • Coincident Growth Collapses

    Open Access•Edmar Bacha, Regis Bonelli•ARTICLE•Novos Estudos - CEBRAP•2016•Cited by: 1

Brazil’s and Mexico’s economies collapsed almost simultaneously in the early 1980s. Their respective outputs per worker remained in a state of near stagnation since then. We develop a comparative analysis to try to understand what went wrong. Macroeconomic magnitudes (capital accumulation and technical progress) exhibit more similarities than differences. These appear more starkly when productivity changes are analyzed at disaggregated levels: by…

  • Uma interpretação das causas da desaceleração econômica do Brasil

Open Access•Edmar Bacha, Edmar Lisboa Bacha et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2005•Cited by: 11•References: 2

The paper aims at explaining why Brazil's GDP growth plunged after 1980. Brazil's GDP grew at 7% yearly from 1940 to 1980 but at only 2.5% per year since then. Increases in the relative price of investment that reduced the purchasing power of savings, associated to declines in the productivity of capital, seem to have been the most important factors behind the observed loss of dynamism. The tentative conclusion is that inward-oriented economic po…

Open Access•Patrice Franko, Carla Macario et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2002

Export Growth in Latin America: Policies and Performance by Carla Macario with Regis Bonelli, Adriaan ten Kate and Gunnar Niels. Latin American and Caribbean countries have substantially transformed their economies over the past decades by adopting policies that set aside import substitution development strategies and foster a greater outward orientation of their economies, assigning a high priority to increasing exports. Nevertheless, in most ca…

  • Productivity, growth and industrial exports in Brazil

    Regis Bonelli•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•1994•Cited by: 1

Because productivity is a determinant of comparative advantages over the medium and long terms, the relationship between productivity, industrial growth and exports of manufactures is coming under increasing scrutiny in studies on development and trade policy. This article analyses that relationship in Brazil, where the rise in industrial productivity has been slowing since the mid-1970s

  • Distribuição de renda no Brasil

Open Access•Regis Bonelli, Lauro Ramos et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•1993•Cited by: 5•References: 2
