Regarding totalities and escape hatches in Mozambican politics and Mozambican studies
Revolution, Counter-Revolution and Revisionism in Postcolonial Africa: The Case of Mozambique, 1975-1994
This groundbreaking study investigates defining themes in the field of social memory studies as they bear on the politics of post-Cold-War, post-apartheid Southern Africa. Alice Dinerman offers a detailed chronicle of the Mozambican government’s attempts to revise the country's troubled postcolonial past with a view to negotiating the political challenges posed by the present. In doing so, she lays bare the path-dependence of memory practices, wh…
Processes of State Delegitimization in Post-independence Rural Mozambique: The case of Namapa District, Nampula Province1
This article argues that the first two decades of Mozambican independence witnessed a proliferation of rural claims to access to, and control over, labor, land and tribute and that this trend contributed to the delegitimization of the Frelimo state. Taking Namapa District, Nampula Province as a case study, it shows the ways in which the reinstatement of chiefs as agents of the local administration in 1992 only served to widen the cascade of claim…
Peasant and state in Mozambique
Merle Bowen's study focuses on the evolution of the 'middle peasantry' in both colonial and postcolonial Mozambique. In doing so, she successfully challenges long-standing, if highly problematic, notions that the Mozambican economy consists of a 'traditional', subsistence-oriented peasant sector with only nominal links to 'modern' forms of agriculture, the urban areas, and regional and international markets. At the same time, she usefully illumin…
From 'Abaixo'to 'chiefs of production: Agrarian change in Nampula province, mozambique, 1975-87
This article reconstructs key aspects of the evolving relationship between state institutions and former regulos (Portuguese-appointed chiefs), in Nampula Province, Mozambique during the first 12 years of independence. In doing so, it simultaneously draws on and critiques two opposing interpretations of revolution and counterrevolution which have dominated scholarly production on post-independence Mozambique and have polarized Mozambican studies …
In search of Mozambique: The imaginings of Christian Geffray inLa Cause des armes au Mozambique. Anthropologie d'une guerre civile
Christian Geffray's recent book contains both rich description and valuable insight into the articulation of Frelimo's national development strategy with the internal dynamics of rural communities. La Cause provides a rare worm's‐eye perspective on the genesis and growth of popular disaffection with the post‐independence government and on local processes of war in northern Nampula Province. However, his principal thesis that the collective turn t…
