Does carceral status signal fitness for jury service? An exploratory study of the state’s role in shaping public opinion
In the United States, a felony criminal conviction often reduces or eliminates opportunities to take part in civic and social life. One such record-based restriction impacts juror eligibility for those with a felony criminal history. In 2020, the Governor of Iowa began automatically restoring the civil rights of those convicted of a felony upon completion of their sentence, creating a new carceral status and thus, offering an optimal context to e…
Attitudes Towards Police Legitimacy and Mock Grand Juror Indictment Decisions in Cases of Lethal Force
Two experiments examined the potentially interactive effects of shooter identity (police officer vs. civilian) and unarmed victim race (Black vs. White) on grand juror decision‐making. In Experiments 1 ( N = 350) and 2 ( N = 344), mock grand jurors read and listened to mock testimony detailing the shooting by a police officer or civilian of an unarmed suspect (Black vs. White) and rendered an indictment decision. Those who chose to indict then se…
The use of the Echo modelTM for education as an innovative approach to educator professional development
After entering the workforce, educators may face novel problems of practice that require additional training. Ongoing professional learning and development (PD) is meant to provide the additional training necessary to ensure educators are prepared to meet those challenges. PD offerings should meet the recommendations of Adult Learning Theory, the Model for Teacher Change, and recommended best practices for adult learning and PD. The ECHO Model fo…
Examining the Crossover Interaction of the Race-Crime Congruency Effect: A Systematic Review
The beyond a reasonable doubt standard of proof: Juror understanding and reform
The beyond a reasonable doubt (BARD) standard of proof is the foundation of criminal court proceedings in the U.S. However, both empirical and field studies alike demonstrate that jurors do not correctly interpret and apply the standard. Misinterpretations of the standard can have large implications for criminal defendants on trial. Thus, researchers and legal scholars have attempted to clarify the standard through various methods (e.g. quantific…
Using a Fork as a Hairbrush: Investigating Dual Routes to Release from Functional Fixedness
Functional fixedness involves difficulty with conceptualizing creative object uses. When it obstructs problem‐solving, individuals must reframe their approach. We examined how different training techniques—chunk decomposition (i.e., considering an object’s basic parts and physical properties) and constraint relaxation (i.e., considering an object’s different functions)—might rely upon different routes to creative reframing. Additionally, we inves…
