Social status and body are significantly related among males but not among females in an Early Medieval Avar population
Background: Adult body height reflects the growth process during the subadult phase of life and varies not only between biological sexes and populations, but also in a diachronic pattern and between different social groups within a population. Objectives: This study investigates the association between estimated body height and social status among early medieval Avars. A significant positive association between body height and social status was h…
“All That Glitters Ain’t Gold”. Jewellery Items and Dress Ornaments as “Identity Markers” in Avar-Period Funerary Contexts (Seventh–Eighth Century AD) from Eastern Austria
High-status Avar warriors identified. Differences in the prevalence of the horse riding syndrome in “high-status” vs. “low-status” adult male burials in the Avar cemetery of Wien 11-Csokorgasse (seven…
Bioarchaeology can contribute to interdisciplinary research on the social organization of the Avar Empire (568 AD to around 800 AD) by providing information on the health, lifestyle and habitual activity patterns of Avar populations, thus offering an important, additional perspective to traditional archaeological methods focusing on material culture. The so-called horse riding syndrome refers to a combination of changes on the human skeleton, whi…
Horse-riding as a habitual activity among the early medieval Avar population of the cemetery of Csokorgasse (Vienna)
Little is known about sex and gender differences in the daily life activities of early medieval Avar populations. Of particular interest is habitual horse-riding, which is assumed to be typical for these populations. Importantly, fundamental changes in the "Avar lifestyle" occurred over time and this may have led to less horse-riding. This study identifies possible sex and chronological differences in the prevalence of metric and nonmetric traits…
A life on horseback? Prevalence and correlation of metric and non-metric traits of the "horse-riding syndrome" in an Avar population (7th-8th century AD) in Eastern Austria
Musculoskeletal stress markers allow the reconstruction of occupational and habitual activity patterns in historical populations. The so-called horse-riding syndrome summarizes several musculoskeletal markers which are commonly interpreted as indicators of habitual horse riding. The individual symptoms of the horse-riding syndrome, however, are still critically discussed. The skeletal remains of mounted warriors are especially suited for the anal…
The Comparative Study of Tool Marks on Non-Ferrous Metalwork from Archaeological Contexts
The aim of this paper is to discuss methodological issues of comparative tool mark studies (with special attention to decorative punched motifs), using a case study on sheet-gold metalwork from the Middle and Late Avar Period (7th–8th centuries AD). The historical interpretation of tool marks on nonferrous metalwork1 can take place at different levels of complexity. In some cases, the identification of products from the same craftsperson is possi…
Vias – the Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science
The Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science (VIAS) was founded within the University of Vienna in 1992 as a forward-looking transdisciplinary institution. VIAS aims to develop and integrate methods from the natural sciences in a dynamic relationship with the culture-oriented investigative frameworks of archaeology, and to provide support, knowledge and partnership in multidisciplinary research programmes and projects. VIAS functions as a core…
Die awarisch-italischen Beziehungen aus goldschmiedetechnischer Sicht
The technological choices made in the production process of a particular object can provide valuable clues regarding the identity and background of the goldsmith who made it. For example, true repoussé ("Treibziseliertechnik") was an uncommon technique throughout the entire Avar Period, although it occurs on a number of high-quality items of metalwork, which may be associated - for typological, stylistic and/or technological reasons - with "Byzan…

Investigation of ancient gold objects from Artemision at Ephesus using portable μ-XRF
During two measurement campaigns in the Archaeological Museum in Istanbul and the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk, Turkey, more than 80 ancient gold objects (e.g. appliqués, statuettes and coins) from the 8th-6th centuries BC were analyzed using portable XRF instruments in order to obtain information on the chemical composition and homogeneity of the artefacts discovered during excavations in the sanctuary of Artemis at Ephesus. These results and comple…
