Wayfair, an American furniture and home goods retailer, garnered sudden attention across social media in 2020, particularly Twitter and Reddit, due to a conspiracy theory linking the company to child trafficking. The short-lived, well-delineated nature of this theory, coupled with its simultaneous emergence across multiple platforms, makes it a distinct case for studying the dynamics of online conspiracy development and spread. Using intermedia a…

  • Not all refugees are framed equal

Eduard Fabregat, Fernando Severino•ARTICLE•International Journal of Media…•2024•References: 38

This study analyses 14,854 news articles about refugees from 72 English-language newspapers worldwide in 2016. Using a combination of topic modelling and network analysis, we inductively identify the frames used to depict refugees and then examine the factors that help shape the news framing of the issue between various countries. We unveiled five frames: cultural and everyday life, Global North politics, aid, violence and international conflict.…

  • Counterpublics and Hegemonic Ideology

Eduard Fabregat, Farooq A Kperogi•ARTICLE•Howard Journal of Communications•2023

In April 2019, Trump criticized Puerto Rican politicians on Twitter for receiving $91 billion in aid from Washington and said Puerto Rico was taking money from the U.S. Even though Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, their political status is the result of a series of colonial policies that ensured an important degree of U.S. political control over their island. Combining topic modeling and network analysis of 8,256 tweets on Puerto Rico between Mar…

  • The ‘other’ in the bowels of the hegemon

    Open Access•Eduard Fabregat, Farooq A Kperogi•ARTICLE•International Journal of Media…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 23

This article explores how America’s mainline institutional media portrayed Guam, an unincorporated US territory in the Pacific Ocean that is home to important American military bases, in a time of heightened tensions between the United States and North Korea. Guamanians represent marginal racial ‘others’ who are nonetheless ensconced in a consequential part of the US military architecture. Using a combination of topic modelling and network analys…

  • The role of boundary objects in Trump's speech

    Eduard Fabregat•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 44

Trump’s use of the words Hispanic, Latino and Mexican during his campaign carried enough meaning to be used in racist contexts. However, those words are also used in a bureaucratic sense. The divergence of meaning protected Trump from being criticized for the words he used even though they carried as much meaning as some of the statements that were challenged. This is so because of the fundamental othering process that the use of the words Latino…

  • On the Erasure of race in control culture discourse

    Eduard Fabregat, Timothy J Beck•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 32

In this paper, we analyze an emergent cultural clash between: (a) how media outlets and other control culture institutions have portrayed events related to Black Lives Matter, and (b) the complex reality of Black Lives Matter movements as they have developed through embodied, intersectional, and always socially situated forms of direct collective action. In focusing specifically on American mainstream media coverage of the killing of Trayvon Mart…
