  • Retour sur le néonaticide

    Philip Resnick, Boris Chaffel et al.•ARTICLE•Enfances & Psy•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 1

  • Hubris and melancholy in multinational states

    Open Access•Philip Resnick•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 9

The article sets out to explore the rather different roles that hubris and melancholy can play in the relations between majority and minority nationalities within multinational states. In the case of majority‐type nationalities, there is a sense of being a Staatsvolk, a feeling reinforced by linguistic, cultural, geographical, and political characteristics associated with the larger nation‐state. There may also be a sense of pride caught up with …

  • The Politics of Resentment

    Philip Resnick•BOOK•Politics of Resentment•2001

Since the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s, the question of Quebec’s status within Confederation has held centre stage in the Canadian unity debate. Comparatively little has been written about British Columbia, a province that for so long has seen itself on the periphery of the Canadian federation. The Politics of Resentment is the first book to examine the role that British Columbia has played in the evolving Canadian unity debate. Resnick explores…

Topics in this collection of essays range from a utopian-style foray into possible structures for democratic governance at the global level to a Hobbesian analysis of the ongoing challenges that democratic theory faces; from an assertion of the importance of social and economic equality to a recognition of the limits of solidarity in the real world of pluralistic and divided societies in which we live; from identification with the cosmopolitan an…

Apres l'echec de l'accord de Meech Lake, les deux travaux s'interrogent sur une solution allant dans le sens preconise par les separatistes et les nationalistes quebecois, a savoir l'acces a la souverainete du Quebec. • Letters to a Québécois Friend

Philip Resnick, Daniel Latouche•BOOK•Letters to a Québécois Friend•1990

Philip Resnick's controversial letters, written as a stirring response to Quebec's stand in the 1988 federal election, will not only galvanize the ongoing discussions on Meech Lake and Free Trade but will bring to the fore the question of Quebec's future relationship to the rest of Canada. Daniel Latouche's reply - often witty but never light-hearted - brings his strong Québécois nationalist views to bear on the questions raised by Resnick and wi…

    Open Access•Philip Resnick•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•1987•References: 4

Both Janet Ajzenstat's and Rod Preece's comments on my article are welcome, not least in allowing me to further develop, by way of reply, some of the implications of the type of theorizing I have been engaged in. For quite aside from the particulars of my interpretation of Montesquieu's doctrines, of Professor Preece's reading of the wisdom of the Canadian founding fathers, or of Professor Ajzenstat's “Blackstonean” reading of the British North A…

This study assesses the contribution of five of the research studies done for the Macdonald Royal Commission and of the opening chapter of the Commission Report to our understanding of the state. It examines the use of the term state, the economic and social functions that the latter is seen to perform, and the light that these studies may shed on such thorny topics as authority, legitimacy and citizenship in the late twentieth century. It conclu…

  • Montesquieu Revisited, or the Mixed Constitution and the Separation of Powers in Canada

    Open Access•Philip Resnick•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•1987•Cited by: 5•References: 10

Montesquieu may be a better guide to understanding the nature of the Canadian state, past and present, than Hobbes or Locke of any of the other political philosophers of the past. This article argues that Montesquieu's doctrine has two major components–a discussion of the mixed constitution, blending monarchical, aristocratic and democratic features, and the separation of powers that distinguishes among executive, legislative and judicial. Each o…

    Open Access•Philip Resnick•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Political…•1973•Cited by: 2•References: 4
