Voices silenced by written texts
This article examines ways in which Indigenous teachers and students draw on diverse language repertoires while deciphering, writing, and translating texts in multilingual educational spaces. Recent normalization of orthographies tends to homogenize indigenous languages in Mexico, while silencing and excluding actual language repertoires, thus reproducing the colonial asymmetry that has privileged Spanish only in public domains. These plays were part of educational campaigns aimed at the Tsotsil and Tseltal Maya population. We show that the discourses circulating during the years in which indigenous politics was being constructed were permeated by opposing and contradictory ideological tensions, tensions …

Hands that propose and hands that respond
This article explores how gestures contributed to the communicative interaction achieved during puppet performances in indigenous communities in the Chiapas Highlands of Mexico. It presents the case of the Petul-Xun hand-glove puppet shows, which were performed from 1954 to 2000 as part of educational campaigns aimed at "modernising" the Tsotsil and Tseltal Mayan population in that region. The study adopts mixed methods to correlate archival docu…

Data explored include the decision to enroll, reactions from peers and family, home-school communication issues, language development, and family involvement. In addition, recommendations for families considering this bilingual option are considered. The primary data used for this arti…
