Wh-word acquisition in Czech
We investigate the acquisition of different functions of wh-words in Czech (Slavic) - a language where wh-words are highly polyfunctional. Our working hypothesis is that the acquisition proceeds in accordance with the growth of the syntactic tree (aka the growing trees hypothesis; Friedman et al. 2021), which in turn is matched by the growth of the semantic representation. More specifically, children are expected to first acquire wh-interrogative…

Definiteness, Uniqueness, and Maximality in Languages With and Without Articles
We present a number of experiments testing influential hypotheses about the meaning of definite descriptions (in languages with articles, represented here by German) and bare nominals (in articleless languages, represented here by Russian). Our results are in line with the commonly entertained hypothesis that definite descriptions convey uniqueness (if singular) or maximality (if plural), but fail to support two hypotheses about bare nominal inte…

Ever free relatives crosslinguistically
Based on a sample of seven languages, I show that the so-called modal inferencesin ever free relatives (ignorance and indifference) are not universally available. The primaryreading of ever free relatives crosslinguistically turns out to be a “non-modal” one, which isavailable to all languages under investigation. The implication is that if there is a modal inferencetriggered by the use of the ever-morpheme in FRs, the inference is likely to have…

Expression of information structure in West Slavic
Expression of information structure in West Slavic
The received wisdom is that word-order alternations in Slavic languages arise as a direct consequence of word-order-related information-structure constraints such as ‘Place given expressions before new ones’. In this article, we compare the word-order hypothesis with a competing one, according to which word-order alternations arise as a consequence of a prosodic constraint: ‘Avoid stress on given expressions’. Based on novel experimental and mode…
The role of givenness, presupposition, and prosody in Czech word order
We present evidence from acceptability judgment experiments that there is systematic prosodic givenness marking in Czech in that discourse-salient elements avoid sentence stress, contra the claim in Kučerová (2007, 2012) that givenness is marked only syntactically---by establishing a word order in which all given elements precede all new ones---and not prosodically in Czech. We argue that the syntactic movement of given elements results from the …
