The road along the coast: Infrastructure, nature tourism and cultural heritage on the White Sea
Two research trips took us to the Kola Peninsula in northern European Russia, where we visited the Terskii Coast of the White Sea. There, we observed the development of nature tourism in this previously undervalued Subarctic destination. A network of local roads and trails has shaped the tourist development process. They not only serve as a key part of its mobility infrastructure, but also as a core element of local heritage that links otherwise …
The Cambridge History of the Polar Regions
The Cambridge History of the Polar Regions is a landmark collection drawing together the history of the Arctic and Antarctica from the earliest times to the present. Structured as a series of thematic chapters, an international team of scholars offer a range of perspectives from environmental history, the history of science and exploration, cultural history, and the more traditional approaches of political, social, economic, and imperial history.…

Economic history of early modern Russia: Introduction
This special issue brings together papers presented in May 2021 at a seminar celebrating the seventy-fifth birthday of Professor Zoia V. Dmitrieva. It was organized by a group of her pupils and colleagues at the National Research University “Higher School of Economics” in St. Petersburg, Russia. The seminar aimed to explore new ways of approaching early modern Russian economic and social history that combine a thorough command of the primary sour…
Соляной рынок Вологды 1630‐х – 1650‐х гг. и развитие коммерческого знания в России XVII в
The article presents the results of an experimental application of complex analysis methods to account books of monasteries: exploiting these documents helps fill in the gaps in the historical sources on trade in seventeenth-century Russia caused by the lack of customs books for a number of large markets. Consideration of the history of salt trade in the compounds of the Solovetskii, Spaso-Prilutskii and Kirillo-Belozerskii monasteries in Vologda…

‘They Have To Go To Greenland’: Russian whalers in Norway in 1726
Small-scale shipping and the maritime commerce of eighteenth-century St. Petersburg
The paper discusses the history of eighteenth-century St. Petersburg coastal shipping in the context of the Early Modern European coastal transportation growth. Based on the sources significantly understudied so far, I discuss the spatial and economic aspects of St. Petersburg coastal transportation. Using the conceptual framework of the littoral society and Greater St. Petersburg, I discuss the uncertainty of the very concept of the St. Petersbu…
Playing maritime capital: The Baltic Sea in the touristic representations of St. Petersburg
This paper presents the first findings of a research investigation into understudied aspects of the touristic use of St. Petersburg’s cultural heritage, notably the development of the ‘Maritime Capital of Russia’ as a tourist brand. We argue that the effectiveness of this imaginary ‘Maritime City’ entails a complex approach based on the concept of ‘Maritimity’. Through this perspective we consider the numerous maritime heritage sites of the city …
Between Piety and Productivity: Monastic Fisheries of the White and Barents Sea in the 16th-18th Centuries
This paper outlines the complexity of interactions between Russian Orthodox monasteries and fish resources of the Russian North in the White and Barents Sea basins. The authors consider the complete cycle of monastic fishing activities as a complex of routine practices of an organizational, managerial, and commercial character. They demonstrate that the monks developed the organizational structure and management system that crucially contributed …
The Metropolitan Bay: Spatial Imaginary of Imperial St. Petersburg and Maritime Heritage of the Gulf of Finland
The paper aims to discuss the multifaceted links between the marine environment of the Gulf of Finland and the representations of the large complex of cultural heritage related to the city of St. Petersburg. The paper is based on a spatial imaginary of Greater St. Petersburg as the cultural and technological unity of the city and adjacent waterscapes in the times of the Russian Empire. This concept is instrumental to see the historical links betw…
Profits from under the water: The international blubber market, Russian monopolistic companies and the idea of whaling development in the eighteenth century
This article explores the history of the Russian monopolistic companies that operated in the international market for blubber in the first half of the eighteenth century. It argues that the long-held view that the companies were unsuccessful is not supported by the statistics relating to the trade, which indicate impressive progress in terms of market revenue and the redistribution of profits. Moreover, the authorities had ambitious strategic goa…
The management of cholera epidemics and the Neva River in St. Petersburg in the nineteenth century
The magic on the sea shore’: The manor of Schloss Fall and the navigation in the Gulf of Finland in the nineteenth century
This research note focuses on the numerous links between the coastal noble estate of Schloss Fall and the development of shipping in the adjacent zone of the Gulf of Finland during the nineteenth century. It therefore expands the traditional perspective of ‘maritimeness’ – maritime culture and identity – in relation to Ostzee province in the north-western part of the Russian Empire. Here, the local manorial culture was an inseparable element of t…
The cultural game of a noble life – (re)presenting historical manors Gatchina and Schloss Fall in comparative perspective
The historic manors of Gatchina and Schloss Fall provide excellent material for comparative study of heritage management and representation. Johan Huizinga’s theoretical framework for describing the ‘cultural game’ provides a stereoscopic vision of practices used at both sites to create desirable historical narratives and to sell them to tourists. Both museums have rich histories and offer a variety of visual attractions such as palaces and parks…
Mastering the Arctic marine environment: Organizational practices of Pomor hunting expeditions to Svalbard (Spitsbergen) in the eighteenth century
We consider the foundations of the widely recognized reputation of the Pomors as experts in dealing with the severe and unpredictable marine environment of the White and Barents Seas. Our research focuses on the history of Russian exploitation of Spitsbergen. Though these kinds of activities occupied only 1% of maritime shipping in the Russian North, the history of exploitation of this Arctic archipelago is contextualized within the history of th…
The Sea on One Side, Trouble on the Other’: Russian Marine Resource Use before Peter the Great
The article explores the connection between Russia and the marine environment during the seventeenth century prior to the modernizing reforms of Peter the Great. Drawing from archival sources, it traces the links binding local and regional actors (e.g. state officials, local fishermen, monastic authorities, etc.) to an array of maritime resources and actors. Emphasis is placed on analysing the routine practices associated with natural resource us…
