Crossing Worlds in Buildings
Holes in the houses of Brussels, as in other buildings across Europe, have long been the preferred nesting sites of the common swift (Apus apus), a bird famous for its fast flight and for spending most of its life on the wing. For several decades, however, urban construction and renovation has led to the destruction of swifts' breeding sites, contributing significantly to their disappearance, and have prompted amateur naturalists to spatial inter…
The Moral Life of Doors in an Open Psychiatric Center
Doors are infamous in psychiatry for being used as instruments of constraint. Yet, while taking a close look at the doors of an open psychiatric center for teenagers in Brussels, I discover that doors play much more ambivalent roles beyond the issue of access and that their normativity shifts in the ongoing practice of care. The game is on!' Eventness at a distance at a livestream concert during lockdown

Numerous artists developed projects, often attempting to reach audiences in cyberspace. We offer an ethnographic study of such a project: a jazz concert played live for a particular audience, who attended it from home. We seek to understand how musicians, audience, and the material setting made it possible to enga…

Science and technology studies (STS) scholars have turned their attention to the materiality of objects and buildings in order to examine what they make users do in practice. Taking a close look at a therapeutic community in a psychiatric day care center for teenagers, this paper joins these discussions by exploring the materiality of “spaces of care” as part of the center’s everyday practice. The analysis incorporates the concepts of scripts and…
