  • Rethinking revolution in the Andes: Contrasting logics of social transformation in Bolivia

    Open Access•Aaron Augsburger•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2025•References: 16

Indigenous movements throughout the Andes have put forward the idea of plurinationalism as a theoretical concept of social transformation. Plurinationalism demands a complete overturning of the existing state structure and a rethinking of the idea of the national collective and social formation undergirding a given nation state. In essence, plurinationalism, through a variety of both ideological and material programs and processes, recognizes and…

  • The plurinational state and Bolivia’s formación abigarrada

    Aaron Augsburger•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 16

This paper examines how the concept of plurinationality relates to the notion of Bolivia as a formación abigarrada (motley, disjointed social formation), and how that social form corresponds with the political form of the state. René Zavaleta Mercado, one of Bolivia’s most influential intellectual figures, is best known for his conceptualisation of the country as a formación abigarrada, which underscores the coexistence of multiple modes of produ…

  • Contested elections, protest, and regime stability: Comparing Belarus and Bolivia

    Tatsiana Kulakevich, Aaron Augsburger•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This article examines the 2020 election and ongoing protest movement in Belarus by comparing them to the contested election in Bolivia (2019) that led to the overthrow of Evo Morales and his MAS party. In each case, a contested election brought about widespread street protests, which called into question the legitimacy of the governing regime. However, only in Bolivia do we see a turnover in state power. In Belarus, Aliaksandr Lukashenka has defi…

  • Constructing Indigenous Autonomy in Plurinational Bolivia: Possibilities and Ambiguities

    Open Access•Aaron Augsburger, Paul Haber•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 16

The municipality of Charagua recently became the first autonomía indígena originaria campesina (autonomous indigenous peasant community) in Bolivia under the 2009 plurinational constitution. A coalition of indigenous leaders backed by a majority of voters embraced the change as a vehicle for bolstering local control over key decisions, thereby advancing local preferences for indigenous forms of governance, values, and control over the development…

  • Visions in conflict: State hegemony versus plurinationality in the construction of indigenous autonomy in Bolivia

Aaron Augsburger, Paul Haber•ARTICLE•Latin American and Caribbean…•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Since their early days in government, and particularly since 2010, President Evo Morales and the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) in Bolivia have put forward a vision of state-centered hegemonic change. In this process, they play the role of a vanguard that relies on the extraction of natural resources, agro-industrial expansion, and the ideas of resource nationalism and development while maintaining the institutional structure of the pre-existing …
