    Open Access•Jorge Battaglino•ARTICLE•Colombia Internacional•2023•References: 29

Objective/context: South America has undergone a process of democratization and progressive reduction of inter-state disputes since the 1980s and 1990s. The disappearance of threats traditionally faced by several states in the region, or their management within the framework of different conflict resolution mechanisms, has led to an unintended effect known as threat deficit, a strategic scenario in which the external threat perception of a State …

  • Evolution of the Argentina Ministry of Defense since 1983

Jorge Battaglino, David Pion-Berlin•ARTICLE•Journal of Strategic Studies•2022•References: 5

Through a progressive strengthening of organizational, legal, and personnel attributes, Argentina's Ministry of Defense has become civilianized. The MOD has been strengthened by the addition of new bureaucratic units headed by civilians with the authority to shape and conduct defense policy while also encouraging interactions with military personnel, resulting in better informed policy choices. This article will account for these changes through …

Open Access•Luis Schenoni, Sean Braniff et al.•ARTICLE•AMÉRICA LATINA HOY•2021•Cited by: 1

  • Was the Malvinas/Falklands a Diversionary War? A Prospect-Theory Reinterpretation of Argentina’s Decline

Luis Schenoni, Sean Braniff et al.•ARTICLE•Security Studies•2020•Cited by: 2

Why did Argentina risk seizing the Malvinas/Falkland Islands by force in 1982, provoking a war against Great Britain, and what are the larger implications of this case? We revisit this influential episode using counterfactual analysis to interpret newly declassified declarations of high-ranking state officials involved in the decision to occupy the islands. These sources cast doubt on the diversionary-war and miscalculation theses of the Malvinas…

  • Threat Construction and Military Intervention in Internal Security

    Open Access•Jorge Battaglino•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Argentina has a deeply rooted tradition of rejecting participation by the military in internal security and legislation that prohibits such involvement. The current construction of a threat from drug trafficking and terrorism and the proposal of intervention by the armed forces to contend with them is the result of a narrative justifying the implementation of various government policies. Exploration of the mechanism of discursive threat construct…

  • The Determinants of Arms Spending in South America

    Open Access•Jorge Battaglino•ARTICLE•Journal of Politics in Latin…•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 6

In recent years, South America has witnessed a large increase in arms purchases. Nonetheless, there are important intraregional differences in terms of the allocation of resources for weapons acquisitions. How can we account for these disparities? Mainstream literature suggests that levels of arms importation depend on either the size of the defense budget or the perception of threat. In contrast, this article contends that the level of spending …

  • The coexistence of peace and conflict in South America

    Open Access•Jorge Battaglino, Jorge Mario Battaglino•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Política…•2012•Cited by: 14•References: 6

South America's predominant democratic regimes and its increasing interdependence on regional trade have not precluded the emergence of militarized crises between Colombia and Venezuela or the revival of boundary claims between Chile and Peru. This way, how can we characterize a zone that, in spite of its flourishing democracy and dense economic ties, remain involved in territorial disputes for whose resolution the use of force has not yet been d…

    Open Access•Jorge Battaglino, Jorge M Battaglino•ARTICLE•Perfiles Latinoamericanos•2010•Cited by: 1
