The growth-inequality debate revisited by rent-seeking theory
Freiner l'endettement

Legislative production and public spending in France
The aim of this article is to help explain the history of the public spending-to-GDP ratio in France by examining the production of laws and regulations. It empirically finds a positive and significant relationship between the number of pages in the Official Gazette of the French Republic and the development of the public expenditure-to-GDP ratio. We rely on the number of pages in the Official Gazette as a proxy for the cost of implementing laws …
Populism and the rational choice model
This article proposes a general model of partisan political dealignment based on the theory of expressive voting. It is based on the Riker and Odershook equation. Voters cast a ballot for a political party if the utility associated with expressing their support for it is more than their expressive costs. Expressive utility is modeled here as a certain utility model. Then, the model is applied to the rise of voting support in favor of French right…
The Democratic Crisis and the Knowledge Problem
This article provides a new explanation for the current democratic crisis by focusing on the growing opposition of citizens to political elites. Modern democracies are basically representative democracies in the sense that citizens are represented by a governing political elite. We argue that democracies are in crisis because this political elite cannot possess the knowledge necessary to manage the complexity of the social order and implement rat…
Ideology and the rationality of non-voting
What is the theoretical impact of the erosion of partisan ties on electoral abstention? This question comes from Downs-North's theory of political ideology, which is a tool to reduce the cost of understanding the political debates. Then, when the left-right political divide becomes less visible, the costs of understanding political debates rise and electoral abstention occurs. This interpretation of abstention has three implications: first, it sh…
Who cares about the environment? An empirical analysis of the evolution of political parties’ environmental concern in European countries (1970–2008)
Why do parties offer environmental policies in their political programs? While a number of papers examine the determinants of citizens’ pro-environmental behaviour, we know little about the extent to which political parties adjust their platform towards environmentalism. We investigate this process through data provided by the Manifesto Project Dataset (CMP) for 20 European countries over the period 1970-2008. Following the literature on public c…
Public Choice Failure and Voter Incompetence in France
This article explains failures of politics and government through the incompetence of voters and their perception biases. It illustrates this argument using the French case. If voters lack knowledge and develop irrational beliefs, then voting is probably not effective as a mechanism for sanctioning public policy. The incompetence of French voters and their anti‐capitalist bias is well documented. This incompetence can be partly explained by the l…
Political ideological shift
The author explains ideological change using a theory justifying an individual's grounds for action. If an individual prefers ideology A to ideology B, it is because the costs of justifying A are less than the costs of justifying B. On this basis, the dynamic behind ideologies is explained partly by their justification context and partly by rises in justification costs. The context for their rationale plays a not insignificant role, as it qualifi…

This article takes part in research on the cultural determinants of the economic performances of a nation. It studies the linkage beetween the culture and the performances by the values and not by the institutions. It shows that the works of economic and political sciences about the relation between the culture and the economic development is not very conclusive. No culture is hostile with the development in these meaning. Sciences of management …
L’entrepreneur comme un homme prudent
This article proposes to unify the economic theories of the entrepreneur by the theory thomist of prudence. It supports that the principal quality of the entrepreneur is to be prudent. It presents in the first two sections the theories of the entrepreneur by organizing them around two traditions. The tradition - Cantillon - Knight - Schumpeter - defines the entrepreneur as a taker of risk able to manage uncertainty and to innovate. The tradition …
