Radiocarbon chronology of post-Scythian burial practices in the Minusinsk Basin (Southern Siberia)
This article examines the radiocarbon chronology of Tes’ and Tashtyk burial sites in the Minusinsk Basin of Southern Siberia. This region is known for its remarkable diversity of burial constructions and highly complex mortuary practices in the post-Scythian period (2nd century BC to 6th century AD). Based on 168 radiocarbon dates, we traced the chronology and variability of burial practices throughout this period. For the first time, a represent…
The Kokentau Ochre Rock Paintings: An Open Archaeological Dataset from East Kazakhstan
This paper introduces the ochre paintings from Kokentau, an open-access archaeological dataset documenting one of the earliest known and most extensive pigment-based rock art assemblages in Kazakhstan. The dataset contains comprehensive photographic documentation and descriptive metadata for 34 outcrops with 75 rock shelters, comprising a total of 702 pictorial figures and abstract signs. These pictographs were created with ochre and other iron-b…
Why so early? Radiocarbon dating of the Vladimirovka mine and the emergence of metallurgy in the Altai Mountains
From Irtysh to Ob: Chronology and Causes of Medieval Migrations (Based on the Materials of the Shaitan Archaeological Complex)
The article is devoted to the phenomenon of the emergence of “steppe” cattle-breeding populations in the Ob River Region at the turn of the I-II millennium AD. The main attention is focused on the Shaitan archaeological complex (Tom’ River Region), which is the northernmost and largest concentration of cattle-breeding-metallurgical sites in the Ob basin. Based on the analysis of new radiocarbon dates and archaeological data, it is concluded that …
Nine types of iron smelting furnaces in southern Siberia in the first millennium AD: A review of archaeological and chronological data
Large-scale mining and smelting of specularite ores in the Altai mountains during the 1st millennium AD
The 'old wood' effect and problems of dating iron smelting sites
The paper is aimed at the analysis of the 'old wood' effect in radiocarbon chronology of iron smelting com-plexes of South Siberia. The production sites are here set outside the settlements, and radiocarbon dating re-mains the only means of their chronological attribution. With the example of Kuyahtanar metallurgical site in the Mountain Altai, we show that the range of a series of radiocarbon dates obtained for the same iron-smelting fur-naces c…
The Origin of Iron Metallurgy in Southern Siberia: A Xiongnu Hypothesis
The article is devoted to the problem of the origin of iron metallurgy and the formation of the first large metallurgical center in the territory of Southern Siberia. On the basis of archaeological and radiocarbon data, it was concluded that not a single iron-smelting furnace of the Scythian time in southern Siberia is known. The oldest iron smelting sites appeared in the region in the 1st century BC — 1st century AD and were associated with the …

The early iron metallurgy in the Siberian Arctic
Archaeological excavations conducted at the settlement-sanctuary of Ust-Polui, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Western Siberia yielded the oldest remains of early iron production in the Circumpolar region of Asia. Ust-Polui archaeological finds associated with metallurgy of iron are dated back to the 3rd century BC – 2nd century AD. Hence the finds date the origins of metallurgical technologies used in the north of Western Siberia virt…
Ethno-archaeological research on indigenous iron smelting in Siberia
The article presents an ethnoarchaeological study of iron smelting as practiced by the indigenous population of Siberia. The relevance of it is accounted for by the fact that archaeological (pre-written) and ethnographic (written) data demonstrate continuous development of traditional iron metallurgy in the region since the early first millennium A.D. up until the early 20 th century. Author suggests that thanks to the common physical and chemica…
D documentation of Old Turkic Altai runiform inscriptions and revised readings of the inscriptions Tuekta-V and Bichiktu-Boom-III
30 Old Turkic runiform inscriptions in the Altai Mountains were digitalized by means of 3D technologies during field research in 2017. How the inscriptions were carved as well as their locations in hardly accessible areas required a solution that would combine a detailed 3D documentation of rock surfaces with mobility and freedom from external power supply. Digital photogrammetry proved to be the optimal choice for achieving highquality documenta…

Anthropomorphic Bronze Masks from the Timiryazevo-1 Burial Ground
This paper addresses rare funerary artifacts— anthropomorphic bronze masks, unearthed in 1973 and 2014 from 5th–8th century AD mounds at Timiryazevo on the Lower Tom River, southwestern Siberia, by an expedition from the Tomsk State University. Their detailed description is provided and the archaeological context is described. Stylistically and technically, the masks represent a separate group, termed Timiryazevo and distributed in the Tomsk-Nary…

The Earliest Evidence of Iron Metallurgy in the Lower Ob River Region (Source): Ust-Polui excavations in 2010-2012
For the first time, the article reveals the ancient iron metallurgy sources discovered in 2010–2012 in the sacrifice site of Ust-Polui (Salekhard). Ust-Polui archaeometallurgical objects date back to the 3rd century BC — 1st century AD and they are the earliest evidence of ferrous metallurgy in the Сircumpolar zone. Discovery of the new Early Iron Age ferrous metallurgy site demonstrates the specific way of human adaptation to the conditions of E…
