The anti-democratic prism: Democratic values and political use of social media in six European countries
Empirical studies have yielded mixed results regarding the relationship between the emergence of social media and the perceived unraveling of the democratic consensus in established democracies. This article contributes to the existing literature by examining a previously overlooked avenue for understanding this relationship: we investigate users’ characteristics and self-selection into different social media platforms. The central hypothesis tes…
Diversity in Spanish Politics? Dynamics of Descriptive Representation of Immigrant‐Origin Minorities in Local Elections
Research has identified an alarming gap in migrants’ descriptive representation across Western European countries with long-standing immigration while showing that not all migrant groups are equally (un)successful in gaining elected office. However, little is known about migrants’ political presence in Southern European countries, which have experienced increased immigration in recent decades. We address this research gap for Spain by focusing on…
Generational differences in the identification of Europeans: The role of the great recession
This paper focuses on analyzing European identification through the exploration of generational differences. The idea that young people are more pro-European than older people is widely accepted in both academia and popular discourse. However, this paper goes further and explores whether such differences exist in both affective and cognitive dimensions of European identification. It is argued that while young people broadly take the European Unio…
National Identity and Preferences for Chinese Inclusion in Mexico
In this paper, we explore the bases of Mexican national identity construction and use an array of conceptions of nationhood to study contemporary attitudes towards foreigners’ sociopolitical rights in Mexico. Rarely is the study of national identity connected with immigration policy preferences in general, and even less so outside advanced countries. We explore the content of Mexicanness and use this content to understand public opinion preferenc…
Electoral (non)alignment between resident and non-resident voters: Evidence from Spain
Over the past decades, diasporas’ engagement in homeland elections has become a highly salient issue, especially given the widespread implementation of enfranchisement policies for citizens living abroad. Spain stands out in the European context with its long emigration history, its sizeable population abroad, and the enactment of the so-called ‛ voto rogado ’ (‛begged vote’) system that hindered external voting by requiring non-resident citizens…
How the traumatic past influences the vote of the populist radical right parties in Germany, Poland, and Spain
Populist Radical Right Parties (PRRPs) often mobilize referring to the past. This aspect is not commonly included amongst the characteristic elements of these parties and, more importantly, we do not know much about the electoral returns of this strategy. In this article, we focus on three PRRPs – AfD in Germany, PiS in Poland and VOX in Spain – to argue that the conflicts of the past play a prominent role in their recent mobilizing strategies. B…
The EU at Stake? Changes in European Identification in Southern Europe and in Germany Following the Great Recession
This article looks at the evolution of European identification during the Great Recession in four Southern European “debtor” countries and in Germany. Although the crisis initially had a negative effect on European identification in the five countries, its medium-term impact was more severe in the Southern European countries than in Germany. While we find that microeconomic variables shed little light to account for these changes, we combine mult…
Higher Means Harder for Female Descriptive Representation? Women with Family Responsibilities and Party Primaries for Local, Regional and National Chambers in Spain
Despite academic interest in the negative effects of primaries on gender descriptive representation, we have little evidence on how this impact varies across territorial levels, especially among women with family responsibilities. We focus on Spain as a multilevel polity (national, regional, local chambers) with mandatory quotas to show that very few females with family responsibilities are selected in primaries at upper territorial levels. While…
Descriptive Political Representation of Latin Americans in Spanish Local Politics: Demographic Concentration, Political Opportunities, and Parties' Inclusiveness
Latin Americans represent one of the most sizable migrant communities in Spain. Yet, unlike other minority groups, they count with longer migration tradition, linguistic and cultural similarities with the Spanish population, and easier access to Spanish nationality. Drawing on original data covering a large number of candidates ( N = 5,055), this article examines whether this apparently favorable configuration guarantees the nomination of candida…
