Shade for whom, when, and where? Demographic inequities and supply-demand mismatch in diurnal shelter shade across Singapore
Urban Heat Islands (UHIs) and intensifying heat stress in cities pose growing risks to public health, outdoor thermal comfort, and climate resilience. Shade is a low-energy and cost-effective strategy for reducing outdoor heat exposure. While a variety of shade infrastructures have been developed to protect people from direct sunlight during hot weather, shelter shade remains largely overlooked in urban studies compared with building and vegetati…
Assessing urban and peri-urban river restoration with natural benchmarks in Hong Kong
From heat maps to cooling actions
MLP-ANN fuses weather and morphology to predict hourly NET across Hong Kong. • Model achieves R2=0.97, resolving diurnal and seasonal thermal stress patterns. • Summer NET peaks at 30.29°C (15:00); winter nights drop to -4.02°C (03:00). • Elevated NET concentrates in highly urbanized zones (e.g., airport, CBD). • Larger green and water patches provide the strongest localized cooling effects. Thermal stress is critical for sustainable, health-orie…
Moderating mechanisms of urban environment and vegetation structure in the cooling effect of urban green space
A hybrid framework for assessing outdoor thermal comfort in large-scale urban environments
Sky view factor shows the strongest correlation with outdoor thermal comfort. • During hot summers, 74.8% of urban areas in Hong Kong experienced strong to extreme heat stress. • Most individuals perceived slight cold stress to neutral during the coldest conditions of Hong Kong. • High levels of thermal stress were noted in urban layouts with low-rise buildings. • In both LCZs 3 and 6, over 90% of areas experienced strong to extreme thermal stres…
Evidence for proactive interference effects in repetitive checking tasks
Why does repeatedly checking one's actions, a common behaviour of those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), undermine memory confidence? The most accepted explanation is that repetitive checking decreases confidence by increasing familiarity with the task, leading to the encoding of fewer perceptual details. We argue that checking, per se, does not decrease memory confidence. Rather, the experimental procedure that has been used to assess c…
