  • Schomburg's Blackness of a Different Matter: A Historiography of Refusal

    José I Fusté•ARTICLE•Small Axe A Caribbean Journal of…•2020

This essay uses Vanessa Valdés's Diasporic Blackness: The Life and Times of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg (2017) to reflect on the different stakes surrounding debates about Schomburg as a historical figure and also as a heuristic for grasping the complex vicissitudes of Afro-Latinx life. It challenges historicizations that presume Afro-Latinidad to be a stable and additive political ontology and that possibly foreclose black Latinx strategies of disi…

  • Repeating Islands of Debt

    José I Fusté•ARTICLE•Radical History Review•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 17

This article performs a relational historical reading of the colonial formations that have bound Puerto Ricans to other colonial subjects throughout the US empire. It begins with an overview of the connections between how the Supreme Court contrived a state of constitutional exception that sanctioned the conquest of Native American tribes and lands and how between 1901 and 1921 they derived a similar status for the United States' insular colonies…

    Open Access•José I Fusté•ARTICLE•American Quarterly•2014•Cited by: 4

This essay weighs the uses and limitations of sovereignty and citizenship for the 7.3 million people who live in contemporary US colonies (i.e., reservations and "unincorporated territories"), where residents continue to be deprived of both political equality and the right to self-determination. It brings to light a series of little-known critiques written by two early twentieth-century Puerto Rican antiracist activist intellectuals, Tomás Carrió…

Containing Bordered “Others” in La Frontera and Gaza: Comparative Lessons on Racializing Discourses and State Violence José I. Fusté (bio) In May of 2008, Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak hinted that Israel would soon wage war on Gaza’s Hamas government by publicly stating the following analogy: “Think about what would happen if for seven years, rockets had been fired at San Diego, California, from Tijuana, Mexico.”1 Six months later, as Israe…

  • Colonial laboratories, irreparable subjects: The experiment of '(b)ordering' San Juan's public housing residents

    José I Fusté•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 9

This article provides a genealogy of the discourses that shaped the public housing policies of the mid-twentieth century in the US island colony of Puerto Rico. In the 1950s and 1960s, a conversation arose between government officials, social science experts, and the local press about how to fix social inequalities by 'ordering' mostly black and mulato, economically dispossessed families residing in shantytowns and barrios. This led to the establ…
