  • Dynamic agglomeration effects of foreigners and natives – The role of experience in high-quality sectors, tasks and establishments

Open Access•Annekatrin Niebuhr, Jan Cornelius Peters et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Science and Urban…•2024

We analyze whether the benefits of work experience that was acquired in denser locations can be explained by the quality of jobs that can be found in agglomerations using administrative data on individual employment biographies of workers in Germany. We find that 79% of the premium for work experience gained in the densest regions can be ascribed to the sectors, tasks and establishments in which experience was acquired. Moreover, we find that for…

  • How does the Covid‐19 pandemic affect regional labor markets and why do large cities suffer most

Open Access•Silke Hamann, Annekatrin Niebuhr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Regional Science•2023

We estimate the spatially heterogeneous effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on labor market dynamics in Germany until December 2021. While initially slightly stronger in rural regions and large agglomerations, adverse effects quickly become more pronounced and persistent in large agglomerations compared to all other region types. We ascribe the larger impact of the pandemic in large agglomerations to two factors. First, a combination…

  • Work experience and graduate migration

Christian Teichert, Annekatrin Niebuhr et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Administrative social security records and event history analysis are used to investigate the significance of previous work experience for the migration decision of German university graduates. The regression results suggest that work experience gained previously and while studying in the university region reduces the likelihood of graduates out-migrating, while extra-regional work activity enhances the probability of labour market entry outside …

  • Does the urban wage premium differ by pre-employment status

Silke Hamann, Annekatrin Niebuhr et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2019•References: 1

This paper investigates whether the density of local labour markets in Germany impacts on the wage of new employment relationships and whether corresponding urbanization economies differ significantly across distinct types of transitions to employment. The results suggest rather small static urbanization benefits. Doubling employment density increases the wage of new employment relationships by 1.0–2.6%. Moreover, benefits seem to accrue only to …

  • How to woo the smart ones? Evaluating the determinants that particularly attract highly qualified people to cities

Tanja Buch, Silke Hamann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Affairs•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 8

Human capital is a driving factor of innovation and economic growth. Urban economies in particular depend on highly qualified workers; therefore, attracting highly skilled workers is a key factor for cities’ economic prospects. We analyze the determinants that influence the migration of highly skilled workers by investigating the migration balance of German cities between 2000 and 2010. The study compares the significance of various work- and ame…

  • Does Cultural Diversity of Migrant Employees Affect Innovation

    Open Access•Ceren Ozgen, Cornelius Peters et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 49

Increasing international labor migration has important effects on the workforce composition of firms in all migrant-receiving countries. The consequences of these changes for firm performance have attracted growing attention in recent years. In this paper, we focus explicitly on the impact of cultural diversity among migrant employees on the innovativeness of firms. We briefly synthesize empirical evidence from a range of contexts across Europe, …

  • What Makes Cities Attractive? The Determinants of Urban Labour Migration in Germany

    Open Access•Tanja Buch, Silke Hamann et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2014•Cited by: 18•References: 38

Striking disparities characterise the population growth of cities in industrialised countries. Some cities suffer from ongoing population decline, whereas other cities have experienced increasing numbers of inhabitants in recent years. Whether labour market conditions or amenities via their impact on migration primarily account for differences in cities’ demographic development is an important issue. This paper investigates the determinants of th…

  • Does Labour Mobility Reduce Disparities between Regional Labour Markets in Germany

Annekatrin Niebuhr, Nadia Granato et al.•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•2011•Cited by: 15•References: 1

Niebuhr A., Granato N., Haas A. and Hamann S. Does labour mobility reduce disparities between regional labour markets in Germany?, Regional Studies. Differences in regional labour market conditions are still pronounced in Germany, especially between the Eastern and Western parts. Traditional neoclassical models imply that labour mobility should reduce such disparities. In contrast, models that include externalities or selective migration suggest …

  • Cultural diversity and entrepreneurship

Open Access•David B Audretsch, David Audretsch et al.•ARTICLE•The Annals of Regional Science•2010

In this paper, we investigate the determinants of entrepreneurial activity in a cross section of German regions for the period 1998–2005. Departing from the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship, the focus of our analysis is on the role of the regional environment and, in particular, knowledge and cultural diversity. Our main hypothesis is that both, knowledge and diversity, have a positive impact on new firm formation. As the determinan…

  • Cross‐border commuting in the Danish‐German border region ‐ integration, institutions and cross‐border interaction

Tanja Buch, Torben Dall Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Borderlands Studies•2009•Cited by: 12•References: 5

Although the process of European integration has facilitated labour mobility in the EU to a considerable extent, cross‐border commuting is still at a low level. We provide evidence on labour mobility in the Danish‐German border region. The objective of this paper is to investigate the recent development of cross‐border commuting in the region and whether this reflects increasing labour market integration. We re‐late the development to different t…
