  • Geology of the Michelangelo quadrangle (H12), Mercury

Open Access•Salvatore Buoninfante, Valentina Galluzzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2025

The Michelangelo quadrangle of Mercury (H12) encompasses the area between latitudes 22.5°S–65°S and longitudes 180°E–270°E. The quadrangle covers almost 6.5% of the planet’s surface with a total area of almost 5 million km2. Geologic contacts and linear features were drawn at a mapping scale between 1:300,000 and 1:600,000, based on photointerpretation of MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) Mercury Dual Imagi…

  • Geology of Tolstoj quadrangle (H08), Mercury

Open Access•Lorenza Giacomini, Laura Guzzetta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2024

Tolstoj quadrangle (H08) is located in the equatorial area of Mercury, between 22.5°N and 22.5°S and 144° and 216°E. Using the NASA/MESSENGER data, we compiled a geological map of the quadrangle at a scale of 1:3.000.000. The main basemap we used was the MDIS 166 m/pixel BDR mosaic. In addition, mosaics with high-incidence illumination from west and east, MDIS global color mosaics, and the MDIS global DEM have been taken into account. In the map,…

  • Geology of the Kuiper quadrangle (H06), Mercury

Open Access•Lorenza Giacomini, Valentina Galluzzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2022

The Kuiper quadrangle (H06) is located at the equatorial zone of Mercury and encompasses the area between 288°E – 360°E and 22.5°N – 22.5°S. Using the NASA MESSENGER data, we compiled a geological map of the quadrangle at a 1:3,000,000 scale. The mapping was mainly based on photo-interpretation of an MDIS (Mercury Dual Imaging System) monochrome 166 m/pixel basemap. Additional datasets were also considered: stereo-DTM of the region, mosaics with …

  • Geology of the Shakespeare quadrangle (H03), Mercury

Open Access•Laura Guzzetta, Valentina Galluzzi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2017

By using images acquired by the Mercury dual imaging system (MDIS) on-board the MESSENGER spacecraft during 2008–2015 and available DTMs, a new 1:3,000,000-scale geological map of the Shakespeare quadrangle of Mercury has been compiled. The quadrangle is located between latitudes 22.5°–65.0°N and longitudes 270.0°–180.0°E and covers an area of about 5 million km2. The mapping was based on photo-interpretation performed on a reference monochromati…

  • Geology of the Victoria quadrangle (H02), Mercury

Open Access•Valentina Galluzzi, Laura Guzzetta et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2016

Mercury’s quadrangle H02 ‘Victoria’ is located in the planet’s northern hemisphere and lies between latitudes 22.5° N and 65° N, and between longitudes 270° E and 360° E. This quadrangle covers 6.5% of the planet’s surface with a total area of almost 5 million km2. Our 1:3,000,000-scale geologic map of the quadrangle was produced by photo-interpretation of remotely sensed orbital images captured by the MESSENGER spacecraft. Geologic contacts were…

  • Barbarous Brahmins, Conquest, and Italian Identity in Petrarch's De Vita Solitaria

    Open Access•Patrizia Palumbo•ARTICLE•Forum Italicum A Journal of…•2008•Cited by: 1

This essay analyzes Petrarch's views of the Indian Brahmins, elaborated by the author in De vita solitaria. In spite of the lack of previous critical attention to the subject, Petrarch's image of the Hindu sages as barbarous savages is an extremely significant repudiation of a centuries-old tradition of Christian authors, who mostly elevated the Brahmins to a model of asceticism, as opposed to the laxity of people of their own faith. Omitting the…

  • Place in the Sun

Patrizia Palumbo, Angelo Del Boca et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Place in the Sun•2004

Given the centrality of Africa to Italy's national identity, a thorough study of Italian colonial history and culture has been long overdue. Two important developments, the growth of postcolonial studies and the controversy surrounding immigration from Africa to the Italian peninsula, have made it clear that the discussion of Italy's colonial past is essential to any understanding of the history and construction of the nation. This collection, th…
