Fading Musical Memory: 150 Years of Lao Phuan Singing in Lopburi, Thailand
As a consequence of numerous wars and forced migrations, the Phuan kingdom, which once flourished on the Plain of Jars in Laos, was obliterated during the 19th century. Much of the population was force-marched down to the Mekong Valley and into northeastern and central Thailand. One of the last contingents settled in central Thailand’s Lopburi province, in the district of Ban Mi. After nearly 150 years of exile there, only two living traditional …

Essentially unknown in the rest of the world and only recently appreciated in China, the globally significant 3000+ ‘corridor bridges’ ( langqiao ) in China far outnumber the better-known ‘covered bridges’ found in North America and Europe. Rivaling or exceeding those in the West in number, age, complexity, and architectural ambition, some of China’s outstanding timber langqiao in the mountains of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces are on the cusp of …

From Country Hick to Rural Hip:A New Identity Through Music for Northeast Thailand Terry Miller (bio) Northeast Thailand, known as Isan, was long the disreputable brother to Thailand's other three regions because it was considered poor, backward, and strange. Although thousands of people from Isan came to work in Bangkok, central Thai tended to look down on them as inferior. During the 1980s and up to the present, however, the image that non-Isan…

Voices from the Past: The Singing and Preaching at Otter Creek Church
A SMALL RELIGIOUS SECT in the southern region of the United States whose singing has been maintained as an oral tradition for more than 125 years would hardly be considered newsworthy since the phenomenon is still relatively common, but finding such a tradition as far north as Indiana is indeed worth noting. The fact that Otter Creek Regular Predestinarian Church in Putnam County, Indiana, has gone undiscovered until now is not surprising conside…
Shadow Puppet Theatre in Northeast Thailand
Among the theatrical traditions of Asia, shadow puppets are perhaps the best known and the most highly developed. The most lively traditions are found in Java and Bali as well as in northeastern Malaysia and southern Thailand. Shadow puppets were important elsewhere too, especially China, India, Cambodia, but except for India these traditions seem to be nearly extinct now, as is the nung yail tradition in central Thailand. To our knowledge no one…
