  • Criminal Trajectories

    David M Day, Margit Wiesner•BOOK•Criminal Trajectories•2020

This book is a nontechnical, accessible, scholarly volume about criminal trajectories within a developmental context. The book provides a comprehensive overview of criminal trajectories as a concept and methodology. It addresses the complexities, controversies, findings, and applications from the rich criminal trajectory literature. It synthesizes material from the current literature in a range of fields, including developmental psychology, devel…

  • The Role of Deviant Lifestyles on Violent Victimization in Multiple Contexts

    Danya Corkin, Danya M Serrano et al.•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•2015•References: 58

Little research utilizing lifestyles theory (Hindelang, Gottfredson, and Garofalo 1978) has examined the role that deviant lifestyles have on the likelihood of witnessing violence among ethnic-minority youth across various contexts. Therefore, we examined the effects of indicators of a deviant lifestyle (delinquent behavior and deviant peers) on exposure to both direct and indirect forms of violence across three contexts (home, school, and commun…

  • Changes in At-Risk American Men's Crime and Substance Use Trajectories Following Fatherhood

    Open Access•David C R Kerr, David Kerr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2011•Cited by: 7•References: 27

Fatherhood can be a turning point in development and in men's crime and substance use trajectories. At-risk boys (N = 206) were assessed annually from ages 12 to 31 years. Crime, arrest, and tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use trajectories were examined. Marriage was associated with lower levels of crime and less frequent substance use. Following the birth of a first biological child, men's crime trajectories showed slope decreases, and tobacco a…

  • Acculturative Stress Among Documented and Undocumented Latino Immigrants in the United States

Open Access•Consuelo Arbona, Norma Olvera et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2010•Cited by: 117•References: 25

The purpose of the study was to examine differences between documented and undocumented Latino immigrants in the prevalence of three immigration-related challenges (separation from family, traditionality, and language difficulties), which were made more severe after the passage of restrictive immigration legislation in 1996. Specifically, the study sought to determine the combined and unique associations of legal status, the three immigration-rel…

  • Arrest Trajectories Across a 17‐year Span for Young Men

    Open Access•Margit Wiesner, Deborah M Capaldi et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•2007•Cited by: 9•References: 44

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of different operationalizations of offending behavior on the identified trajectories of offending and to relate findings to hypothesized dual taxonomy models. Prior research with 203 young men from the Oregon Youth Study identified six offender pathways, based on self‐report data (Wiesner and Capaldi, 2003). The current study used official records data (number of arrests) for the same sample. …

  • Young Adult Substance Use and Depression as a Consequence of Delinquency Trajectories During Middle Adolescence

    Open Access•Margit Wiesner, Michael Windle•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 3

This longitudinal study extended work from Wiesner and Windle (2004) by examining young adult outcomes (i.e., alcohol and illicit drug use, depression) of middle‐adolescent trajectories of delinquent behavior for a community sample of 724 young women and men (at average ages 23.8 years). Each domain of young adult adjustment problems was assessed with three indicators (i.e., lifetime rates of psychiatric disorders, annual rates of psychiatric dis…

  • Co-occurring delinquency and depressive symptoms of adolescent boys and girls

    Margit Wiesner, Hyoun K Kim•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2006•Cited by: 16•References: 1

Co-occurring trajectories of delinquent behavior and depressive symptoms and their correlates were examined in a longitudinal sample of 985 middle-adolescent boys and girls (mean age = 15.54 years at Time 1). Dual trajectory analysis was used to identify the co-occurring trajectories. For boys (n = 472), 4 delinquency and 4 depression trajectory groups were found. For girls (n = 513), 3 delinquency and 3 depression trajectory groups were identifi…

  • Relations of Pubertal Timing and Depressive Symptoms to Substance Use in Early Adolescence

    Open Access•Margit Wiesner, Angela Ittel•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2002•Cited by: 13•References: 6

The aim for this longitudinal study was to test three hypotheses concerning the effects of pubertal timing on substance use during early adolescence. The maturational deviance hypothesis posits that any deviation from the norm, that is, early maturation and late maturation, would increase the risk for substance use. The stage termination hypothesis proposes that only early maturers would show higher levels of substance use. The mediation hypothes…

  • Vocational Preferences of Early Adolescents

    Open Access•Fred W Vondracek, Rainer Κ Silbereisen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•1999•Cited by: 6•References: 2

The timing of early vocational preferences was compared in a sample of young adolescents from former East Germany and from West Germany. Because of German unification in 1990, and the attendant massive sociocultural changes, such a sample offers a unique opportunity to examine the joint influence of development and context on key transitions and on the accomplishment of developmental tasks. Results suggested that, as the memory of the restrictive…
