A Third Term for FDR
A Third Term for FDR is a judicious study of the 1940 election in which an unusually popular president pursued a controversial third term as global conflict loomed. John W. Jeffries, the author of two previous books on wartime politics and society, emphasizes how domestic considerations shaped the 1940 election. He argues that this contest is best understood not in terms of the fast-moving international events of 1939–1940 but as a “maintaining” …
Transatlantic Social Politics, 1800-Present
Transatlantic Social Politics, 1800–Present is a collection of essays that pays tribute to Daniel T. Rodgers's acclaimed Atlantic Crossings: Social Politics in a Progressive Age (1998). If the past is often seen through a global or transnational lens today, this was not always the case. Contrary to scholarship that still tended to identify exceptional and national trends, Rodgers has enlarged the framework and has paved the way for a new generati…
William Jennings Bryan's 1905–1906 World Tour
This article is a study of the 1905-6 world tour undertaken by William Jennings Bryan and his family. Bryan was one of the major US politicians of his era. Three times a Democratic party presidential nominee (1896, 1900, 1908), he played a prominent role in the various reform crusades of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and was the leading figure on the populist, agrarian wing of his party. To date, however, historians have paid…
A Life in Progress
This article is a study of La Follette's Autobiography, the autobiography of the leading Wisconsin progressive Robert M. La Follette, which was published serially in 1911 and, in book form, in 1913. Rather than focusing, as have other historians, on which parts of La Follette's account are accurate and can therefore be trusted, it explains instead why and how this major autobiography was conceived and written. The article shows that the autobiogr…

Local and National Identities in the Politics of Consumption
Using the anti‐chain store movement as a case study, this article explores the relationship between the local and the national in the twentieth‐century politics of consumption. It shows that independent merchants in the 1920s and 1930s articulated a potent form of localist politics. They believed that this politics was crucial both to the nation and to national well‐being. Historians who work on the relationship between the state and consumption,…
The Anti-Chain Store Movement and the Politics of Consumption
This essay examines the anti-chain store movement of the 1920s and 1930s in order to contribute to debates about the origins and nature of modern US consumer politics. It argues that this movement of independent merchants and their followers is best understood as an expression of populist antimonopolism. Opponents of the chains saw themselves as speaking for 'the people' and were virulently hostile to large aggregations of economic and political …
Mr. Democrat
Mr. Democrat tells the story of Jim Farley, Franklin D. Roosevelt's campaign manager. As party boss, Farley experienced unprecedented success in the New Deal years. And like his modern counterpart Karl Rove, Farley enjoyed unparalleled access and power. Unlike Rove, however, Farley was instrumental in the creation of an overwhelming new majority in American politics, as the emergence of the New Deal transformed the political landscape of its time…
