As corrections systems have slashed budgets for essential services, incarcerated individuals are increasingly expected to cover the costs of their institutionalization, including amounts for administrative fees and legal support, and for covering basic necessities during incarceration. This article focuses on the commissary system as a centra…
You Need Money to Live in Prison

Make What You Love
In this essay, we investigate the rise of the "Maker movement" in the United States, using Alabama Chanin (AC), a company based in Florence, Alabama, at the vanguard of the "ethical fashion," "DIY," and Maker movement, as our case study. Why would the homework model of production—among the most precarious for workers—be embraced as an engine of national economic revival? What are the consequences of transforming forms of production into types of …
All in the Family
This article examines the ways Asian American designers imagine their relationship to Asian garment workers and considers the discursive and performative acts that have enabled them to transform obligatory encounters within the marketplace into voluntary relationships that exceed the realm of economic exchange. These include most prominently a performance of kinship that rewrites Asian sewers and contractors into "uncles" and "aunties" who "help …
Alien Encounters
Cusack's souped-up Camaro and his good ole' American ingenuity (aided and abetted by a French tomboy). In Sixteen Candles (1984), a kooky and lecherous Chinese exchange student named Long Duck Dong provides ''comic relief '' in his supposedly misplaced desire for the masculine female jock over the more appropriately feminine (and annoyingly petulant) heroine Samantha. In a number of these films, we witnessed fears of an '' Asian invasion'' in U.S. …
