  • Frequency and variation of three-rooted lower first permanent molars in precontact Easter Islanders and in Pre-Conquest Peruvians

    Open Access•Andrea G Drusini, Daris R Swindler•ARTICLE•Dental Anthropology Journal•2018•Referencias: 1

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of mandibular first molars featuring a distolingual root in two archeological collections. A total of 172 teeth from Pre-Contact Easter Islanders and 281 teeth from three Pre-Conquest Peruvian sites were examined looking for the presence of three-rooted lower first permanent molars (3RLM1). The Easter Island teeth were recovered during the Ahu Tongariki excavation Project 1993-2001: we iden…

The relationship between sex, age and histomorphometry in femoral cortical bone was examined in a 19 th century skeletal population from the XIX-XX Century Northern Italy, and compared with the femoral sections belonging to the Tongariki Easter Islanders (XVII-XVIII Century A.D.).Femoral cross sections were examined using an image analysis system.Several histological variables were calculated to assess differences between sexes and among age grou…

    Open Access•Andrea G Drusini, Simonetta Bredariol et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2000•Referencias: 7

Since the contribution of Brothwell and co-workers in early 1968, few studies have considered the cortical bone involution in European skeletal series of archaeological interest. The present study concerns the involutive process mechanisms and intra- and inter-sexual variability in femurs of 66 adults belonging to three graveyards of the Longobard era excavated in the Vicenza province (northeast Italy). Cortical thickness and cortical and medulla…

  • The comparison between two age estimation methods based on human teeth

    Open Access•Elżbieta Żądzińska, Andrea G Drusini et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Review•2000•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 23

From among age estimation procedures we chose two for comparison. One of them is the standard method based on root dentin transparency; the other one is based on coronal pulp cavity heigth. The material consisted of X-ray photographs and longitudinally sectioned teeth of 276 individuals (174 males and 102 females) of known age. The comparison shows that the poorly known TCI method is at least as precise as the most widely applied and acknowledged…

  • Microchemical and crystallographic analysis of human bones from Nasca, Peru. A possible method of direct dating of archaeological skeletal material

Open Access•Gianmario Molin, Gianmariο Molin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1998

This paper provides two archaeometric equations obtained by crystal–chemical parameters for dating human bone samples from the archaeological site of Nasca, Peru. Based on radiocarbon dating, the burials span from 500 BC to AD 1000. Crystal–chemical modifications in bone hydroxylapatite over time were compared with a twentieth century skeleton from Italy. Chemical analysis was carried out by means of electron microprobe along a profile from the p…

  • The coronal pulp cavity index

    Open Access•Andrea G Drusini, Oriella Toso et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1997•Referencias: 44

The correlation between reduction of the coronal pulp cavity and chronological age was examined in a sample of 846 intact teeth from 433 individuals of known age and sex. Panoramic (rotational) radiography was used to measure the height (mm) of the crown (CH = coronal height) and the height (mm) of the coronal pulp cavity (CPCH = coronal pulp cavity height) of 425 premolars and 421 molars from 213 males and 220 females. The tooth-coronal index (T…

  • Age at death determination by means of femoral frequency of secondary osteons

    Open Access•Giancarlo Alciati, Andrea G Drusini et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1994•Citada por: 1

A statistical model for the estimation of the age at death is defined and tested to evaluate its performance. It is characterized by the probability of the femoral frequency of secondary osteons for any given age, that we compute by means of 28 scheletons of Italian subjects. In a standard case we obtain good evalutations of the methods, while in practice it can be used according to the objectives of the particular investigation. Moreover other s…

  • Age estimation from teeth using soft X-ray findings

    Andrea G Drusini•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•1993•Citada por: 2

Soft X-ray photos of 68 premolars and 98 molars from 102 males and 64 females were taken to measure the length (mm) of the corona (CL) and the length of coronal pulp cavity (CPCL). Then the coronal index CI = CPCL x 100/CL after Ikeda et al. (1985) was computed for each tooth and regressed on the actual age of the individuals to obtain equations that allow estimation of age in unknown bodies and isolated teeth. The correlation coefficients ranged…

  • Age‐related changes in root transparency of teeth in males and females

    Open Access•Andrea G Drusini•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1991

The correlation between root transparency and chronological age was examined in a sample of 366 intact teeth from 295 individuals of known sex and age. Correlations, especially for anterior teeth (incisors and canines), were slightly higher in females than males, but neither the slopes nor the Y intercepts of the regression lines were significantly different. Linear regression analysis to predict age separately for males, females, and the total s…

  • Root dentine transparency

    Open Access•Andrea G Drusini, Andrea Drusini et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1991•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 12

Root dentine transparency (RDT) was used to estimate the ages of human subjects from 152 intact teeth. Teeth were from 134 subjects, both historical and recent, of known age and sex. The aims of this work are 1) to compare two methods of using RDT to estimate age; 2) to test the applicability of the regression formulae for estimating age obtained from a recent sample on an historical sample; and 3) to estimate the suitability of RDT to determine …

  • Age determination in human adults by dental histology

Andrea G Drusini, Andrea Drusini et al.•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Morphologie und…•1990

Dentine root transparency (RDT) has been measured on 70 histological sections of teeth from 46 individuals of known sex and age. In order to obtain the estimates of individual chronological age, Bang & Ramm (1970) equations have been applied to the value obtained by the measurements. Using the percentage ratio hx100/H (after Lemendin & Cambray 1981)--were h is the extension of the root transparency zone (in mm) and H is the total root length (in …

  • Skeletal age determination by nandibular histomorphometry

    Open Access•Andrea G Drusini, A Drusini et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1990•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 4

50 undecalcified cross sections of mandible of 50 individuals of known sex and age (32 males and 18 females) were examined. The sample age range was 18–97 years. The avnumber of secondary osteons (X1) and average number of fragmented osteons (X2) were computed to correlate them with chronological age at death (Y). Linear regression analyses showed that in this age group, age at death could be estimated with a S.E. of ±6.42 years for the variable …

The methods of Kerley (1965) and Thompson (1978, 1979) for the microscopic deter mination of age at death have been tested on the femora, tibiae and fibulae of 24 skeletons of known sex and age taken from the osteological collection of the Institute of Anthropology, Department of Biology, of the University of Padua, Italy. The results were compared with the data provided in liter ature. Some methodological refinements were carried out ? i. e. the…
