THINK Outside the Box: Integrating a DisCrit Framework With a Trauma-Informed Care Approach to Black Disability Justice
The THINK model, a Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit) framework and trauma-informed care approach for working with Black Americans with disabilities in counseling, acknowledges intersections of race, disability, and historical trauma. Systemic racism and ableism compound the challenges faced, and counselors must use a culturally responsive, trauma-informed lens. We encourage counselors to THINK outside the box through transformative educat…

Value problems of Welfare-Capitalism
I have borrowed this term from Richard Crossman. When he wrote his contribution to the New Fabian Essays in 1952 he took stock of the present state of socialism, as the original Fabians had done in 1889. He hoped to discover 'a philosophy of Socialism' with life in it. But he failed. An obvious place to look for it was in the Welfare State, as it had emerged from the hands of the post-war Labour government. But the Welfare State, he decided, was …

Behaviour Adaptation in Late Life
ever, would have us use a logical analogy. The second volume is designed to stand in synthetic relationship, as the last part of a triad, to the thesis and antithesis of Books One and Two in Volume I. This dialectical development is intended to emphasize the resolution of the tension between what Professor Gay called modern paganism in his first volume and the insecure Christianity of the enlightened century. Neither of the titles he gives to thi…

Reflections on Power
The author explains how his interest in rights, as they were established in the 18th and 19th centuries, led to an interest in the forms of power that emerged in the 20th. Theories about the innate vulnerability of mass democracy to assaults by autocratic power are discussed and the capacities of different kinds of rights to resist them are assessed. The conclusion reached is that civil rights are the strongest in this respect, so much so that th…

The Welfare State: A Sociological Interpretation
It is the business of sociologists to classify social phenomena and arrange them in categories. They base their operations on concepts which have been rigorously denned and purified to the point at which they resemble prime numbers. The practice has not unnaturally spread into that intermediate area of literature which can be called either popular sociology or intellectual journalism according to taste. But there it is used for tying labels round…
