  • Missing Links: New Data on the Mesolithic Blade Industry of Inland Northern Fennoscandia

    Anton Murashkin•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2024

According to a widely held view the lithic raw material sources of the Mesolithic industry of Northeastern Fennoscandia were limited by quartz, which is a breakable material unsuitable for blade production. It is thought that the nature of the raw material predetermined the flake-based character of the industry. Rare blades and blade tools are considered imports. However, twenty one Early Mesolithic assemblages with varying numbers of blades have…

    Open Access•M A Manninen, Hege Damlien et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 22

Population genetic studies often overlook the evidence for variability and change in past material culture. Here, the authors use a Mesolithic example to demonstrate the importance of integrating archaeological evidence into the interpretation of the Scandinavian hunter-gatherer genetic group. Genetic studies conclude that this group resulted from two single-event dispersals into Scandinavia before 7500 BC. Archaeological evidence, however, shows…
