  • Epistemology for the Rest of the World

Stephen Stich, Masaharu Mizumoto et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Epistemology for the Rest of the…•2018

Anglophone epistemologists have devoted a great deal of attention to the English word “know” and to English sentences used to attribute knowledge. Many contemporary epistemologists, including contextualists and subject-sensitive invariantists, are concerned with the truth-conditions of “S knows that p ,” or the proposition it expresses. However, there are over 6,000 languages in the world. Thus, it is not clear why we should think that subtle fac…

  • The Contribution of Confucius to Virtue Epistemology

Sarah Ryan, Eric Mccready et al.•BOOK•Epistemology for the Rest of the…•2018

Scholars have typically regarded Confucius as an ethical thinker broadly construed and not as an epistemological thinker. This chapter seeks to overturn that view and, in doing so, has three basic goals. The first goal is to make the case that Confucian thought is of epistemological significance. Goal two is to locate the significance of Confucian thought within epistemology while accounting for the past overlooking of this significance. The thir…

  • Against Lexical Self-Reference

    Eric Mccready•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2015•References: 13

This squib discusses a problem that arises when a standard degreebased semantics for intensifiers is combined with a second-order contextualist semantics for the predicate average on its concrete reading. In a nutshell, the combination requires that the argument of totallyaverage be simultaneously average in every respect and not average at all in one particular respect. This problem is claimed to arise from allowing (in a sense) the denotation o…

  • Expressives and Expressivity

    Open Access•Eric Mccready•ARTICLE•Open Linguistics•2014

This paper considers the questions of translatability and expressive power. It is argued that truthconditional content is always translatable, and does not produce differences in expressive power. Most nontruth- conditional content—presupposition, ‘side effects’ such as anaphora, and conventional implicature—is shown to not always translate successfully, but still not to produce genuine differences in expressivity. This last property appears to c…

  • Formal Approaches to Particle Meaning

    Open Access•Eric Mccready•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 29

This paper considers the formal analysis of particles. It first defines the notion of particle in question, then looks at particles in English, German and Japanese and some formal analyses that have been proposed for them. Finally, it examines some general questions related to particle meaning involving meaning types and restrictions on distribution

  • Were, Would, Might and a Compositional Account of Counterfactuals

Nicholas Asher, Eric Mccready•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2007

This paper has two purposes. We first give a new dynamic account of epistemic modal operators that account for both their test-like behaviour with respect to whole information states and their capacity to induce quantificational dependencies across worlds (modal subordination). We then use this theory, together with an analysis of conditionals and irrealis moods, to give a fully compositional semantics of indicative and counterfactual conditional…

  • Created Objects, Coherence, and Anaphora

    Eric Mccready•ARTICLE•Journal of Semantics•2006

This paper considers the possibility of anaphoric dependencies to the objects of creation verbs in progressive aspect. It is shown that such dependencies are possible in the right circumstances and a classification of the felicitous cases is proposed. A formal analysis making use of pragmatic information and discourse structure is given. Finally, some broader implications of the analysis are discussed.

  • Functions of English "man"

    Open Access•Eric Mccready•ARTICLE•ZAS Papers in Linguistics•2006

This paper discusses the semantics of the English particle man. It is shown that this particle does different things when used sentence-initially and sentence-finally. The sentenceinitial use is further shown to separate into two distinct intonational types with different semantic content. A formal semantics is proposed for these types
