Interpreting the city: Portrayals of place in a Toronto-area ethnic newspaper
This study investigates the sense of place portrayed in Ming Pao, a Chinese-language daily newspaper published in the Greater Toronto Area (gta). Mapping and content analysis of local news stories and photographs show that while the newspaper provides more coverage of the Chinese community than the mainstream media, there is an overwhelming emphasis on homeland news and a relatively limited range and amount of local news coverage. Mapping Change in Canada’s Local News Landscape: An Investigation of Research Impact on Public Policy
This study investigates whether the Local News Map, a crowdsourced digital tool that tracks changes to local news outlets, influenced policy making that resulted in new government supports for Canadian journalism. It demonstrates how scholarly research informs government decision making and identifies a more nuanced approach to tracking research impact at a time when funders are increasingly demanding evidence that research dollars are well spent…

Canada's political class is embracing ethnocultural news media with increasing zeal, highlighting the need to understand the role of these news organizations in the political process. This study investigated coverage of Canada's 2011 federal election in five Toronto-area ethnocultural newspapers.
