Citizenship in the Context of Contested Nationalism: Insights From Basque Social Movements
This paper contributes to knowledge about social movements' visions of citizenship. The aim is twofold: on the one hand, to offer an analysis of how social movements understand the subjective and objective dimensions of citizenship. On the other, to explore how a context of national conflict shapes activists' perspectives on this concept. To this end, it presents a case study focused on the Basque Country, a territory in which sub‐state nationali…
Prefigurative politics and sub-state nationalist movements. The case of young Basque-nationalist left activists
This article explores the relation between left-wing sub-state nationalist movements and late modern prefigurative politics, a field of study little developed until now. The analysis is based on a case study on nationalist youth activism in the Basque Country, carried out by means of a qualitative methodological approach using in-depth interviews. The reformulations and adjustments of discourse in the post-ETA nationalist movement were addressed …
Is the National Question a Problem for Social Movements? Activist Discourses from the Basque Country

Feminist, socio-ecology, pro-migrant and pro-language activists participated in this qualitative research. Our analysis indicates that a disposition towards collaboration can be observed within the social movements investigated. While this represents a shift as compared to decades past, different and sometimes conflicting national imagi…
What tools should we use?’: Politicized youth’s perspectives on digital activism in the Basque Country
As has occurred with all political activism, contentious counter-hegemonic activism has found a new space for political action on the internet. The massive expansion of digital space in recent years has increased the socializing importance of the field of communications, especially among young people. However, it is not known to what extent the use of internet-based tools has spread in the contemporary protest repertoires of young Basque activist…
Gender and agency in the political learning of contentious activism. Reviewing activist models of young people in the new political cycle in the Basque Country
The reproduction of gender order in young people’s learning of counter-hegemonic contentious activism may seem a contradiction in a political field seeking to transform the social order and help empower its activists. A qualitative study carried out on young activists in the sphere of leftist Basque nationalism in the aftermath of ETA’s armed activity revealed that the repertoires and forms of action of contentious politics foment activist ideals…
Current discourses and attitudes in favour of the independence of the Basque Country
With the aim to win support for its political project, Basque nationalism has traditionally sought to get an increasingly larger number of people to share a national identity. However, in the twenty first century, we can appreciate another discourse, which goes beyond national sentiment, and includes aspects that are more related to social and personal wellbeing. This second discourse has given rise to a new attitude to the independence of the Ba…
Conflicting nationalist traditions and immigration: TheBasque case from 1950 to 1980
Immigration from the different regions inSpain to theBasqueCountry has traditionally opposedBasque andSpanish nationalism. This article provides an overview of the discourse of both nationalist traditions with respect to the intra‐regional migration movement of the second half of the twentieth century as well as of the resulting controversy. Whereas the Basque nationalist movement claims to have defended the need to integrate immigrants since the…
