Health, trauma, and social care in a medieval rural community
The Santa Maria necropolis (Idanha-a-Velha), primarily dated to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, represents a rare and securely dated medieval skeletal assemblage from the interior of Portugal. Twenty-seven out of the 44 adult individuals exhumed (61%) show evidence of at least one pathological skeletal condition, reflecting a high prevalence of disease and trauma in this rural community. Here, a general overview of skeletal alterations in t…
Old habits die hard
Osteomalacia remains rarely identified in paleopathology despite its characteristic skeletal manifestations. Cloistered religious communities constitute a high-risk context as older age, extensive body covering, indoor confinement, and periodic fasting collectively reduce cutaneous vitamin D synthesis and dietary intake. This study presents the skeletal remains of two nuns recovered from the Dominican convent of Santa Catalina de Siena in Belmont…
Exploring the Bony Flatlands
Distinguishing physiological from pathological bone formation in immature skeletal remains is one of the most persistent challenges in nonadult bioarchaeology, yet empirical criteria for this distinction are lacking in the literature. This study fills this gap by applying a descriptive, macroscopic baseline in a documented sample of 172 identified nonadult skeletons aged from five gestational months to 6 years, curated at the Granada osteological…
Analysis of Organic Microremains in Extramasticatory Occlusal Dental Grooves
This case study addresses the interpretive intricacies of establishing a cause‐and‐effect relationship between organic microremains and extramasticatory use of the dentition as a “third hand,” particularly in the context of prehistoric thread‐making activities. The evidence derives from an occlusal groove on the mandibular right central incisor (Tooth 41) of a juvenile female (16–20 age‐at‐death) from Burial 117 at Castellón Alto , an Argaric Bro…
Echoes of Unwoven Breaks
This study presents a wide literature review of nonunion fractures in paleopathological contexts, including the description of a new case from Idanha‐a‐Velha (Castelo Branco, Portugal). Nonunion factures, characterized by the failure of broken bone fragments to reunite properly, are rare in the paleopathological record. This review aims to gather and analyze existing cases of this condition, using academic databases and specific research terms re…
Only photos on my best side, please! Implications of bilateral asymmetry of the iliac auricular surface in non‐adult individuals for sex estimation
This study aims to address the overlooked effect of bilateral asymmetry for sex estimation in non‐adult paired bone structures. Using a recently developed method, disparities between right and left iliac auricular surfaces (AuSs) were quantified, also verifying the effectiveness between sides regarding the percentages of cases correctly assigned. A sample of 418 AuSs belonging to 209 individuals aged 5 gestational months to 18 years (113 males an…
Possible thalassemia intermedia in a child (16th–18th century) from the westernmost part of Europe
This study describes a non-adult individual with bone features suggestive of β-thalassemia, a disease commonly found in malaria-endemic regions today and in the past. The skeleton of a 5.5- to 6.5-year-old child exhumed from a 16th- to 18th-century CE necropolis in Almeirim (Portugal) was examined macroscopically, with a scanning electron microscope, and by conventional radiology and computed tomography. This individual shows frontoparietal diplo…
Methods for sex estimation of prepubertal individuals (< 12 years old)
century; however, 24 have not been tested yet. Comparing all the methods tested, the percentages of correctly estimated cases are always lower in validation studies. It is suggested that the most promising ones be tested in documented samples by a group of researchers. Thus, the interobserver error would be evaluated and may also lead to new methodological proposals and refinements.
Evaluation of the auricular surface method for non‐adult sex estimation on the Lisbon documented collection
OBJECTIVES: Sex is usually not estimated in skeletonized non-adult individuals because sexual dimorphism is considered minimal before puberty. In 2017, a new approach based on the shape of the auricular surface was proposed, showing that this anatomic area of the ilium is dimorphic. This study tests the reproducibility and evaluates the accuracy of the method in a bigger sample. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty males and 31 females from the Lisbon C…
