  • Bordering and orientation on the cusp of adulthood: Scandinavian Afghans' in France

    Open Access•Moa Nyamwathi Lønning•ARTICLE•New Community•2025•References: 25

This article engages with the concepts of ‘bordering’ and ‘orientation’ to explore experiences of becoming adult under conditions of protracted uncertainty and temporariness. As an analytical framework, these concepts intertwine with space, time and violence, while also accounting for how the structural and subjective shape both inner and outer worlds. The article is based on longitudinal ethnographic fieldwork among young Afghan men who have sou…

  • “You hold your life in your hands until you arrive in another country”: Young Afghans seeking onward mobility from Greece

    Open Access•Moa Nyamwathi Lønning•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2024

This article considers the interplay between mobility and immobility in the everyday lives of young people on the move. It looks at the ways interactions with and categorisations by protection structures and restrictive border and migration regimes lead to diverse trajectories. The article is based on research with young men from Afghanistan mostly classified as unaccompanied minors. Some of the young men were seeking to continue their journeys f…

  • After Being Granted or Refused Asylum in Norway: Relational Migration Journeys among Afghan Unaccompanied Young Men

    Open Access•Moa Nyamwathi Lønning•ARTICLE•Social Sciences•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 26

This article considers experiences of moving and dwelling in Europe among Afghan unaccompanied young men in the context of stringent migration, asylum, and settlement processes. The young men embarked as minors and arrived unaccompanied in Norway. There, their claims for asylum had radically different outcomes: some were granted international protection and others were refused asylum. The article sheds light on forms of relationality on migration…

  • Gender, racialisation, and border regimes: Reflections on Social Positions and Positioning in Research With Young People on the Move

    Moa Nyamwathi Lønning, Océane Uzureau•ARTICLE•New Community•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 33

This article starts from our experiences as two Western women of Black mixed-race background, undertaking fieldwork among unaccompanied young men on the move in Europe. We add to scholarship on ethnographic accounts of encounters. We do this by reflecting on how our positionality affected the research process along often taken-for-granted social categories and markers of sameness and difference, as they related to our fieldwork and the space crea…

  • «Jeg husker så godt da krigen kom til Norge»: Ni oppvekstfortellinger fra perioden 1923 til 1946

    Open Access•Moa Nyamwathi Lønning•ARTICLE•Heimen•2021

  • Memories, Mementos, and Memorialization of Young Unaccompanied Afghans Navigating within Europe

    Open Access•Moa Nyamwathi Lønning, Ravi K S Kohli•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 11

This article considers memories, mementos, and memorialization in stories by unaccompanied young people and their journeys within Europe. It looks at their ‘navigation’ of remembering and forgetting and how this intertwines with movement and stillness. It is based on a study about Afghan males aged 15–24 years in Norway and Greece. Participants differed in terms of their backgrounds, migration projects, and their legal status. In their various ci…

  • Layered journeys: Experiences of fragmented journeys among young Afghans in Greece and Norway

    Open Access•Moa Nyamwathi Lønning•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2020•Cited by: 12•References: 19

This article focuses on the fragmented journeys towards and within Europe among a group of young people originating from a country marked by war and conflict. It explores how the journey towards Europe may be part of a complex migration history that leads to layered journeys. I use the term ‘layered journeys’ to refer to multidimensional and multi-experiential journeys in which past, present and future experiences of mobility are intertwined. The…

  • European Asylum Policies and the Stranded Asylum Seekers in Southeastern Europe

Open Access•M Valenta, Moa Nyamwathi Lønning et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 1

This article focuses on the restrictive European asylum policies and on their humanitarian consequences in Southeastern Europe. We discuss two interrelated topics: (i) the dynamic of the migration of asylum seekers to Europe and (ii) the specific position of Southeastern European countries and the situation of stranded migrants in the region. We identify central elements in the European asylum system and suggest that different parts of the system…
