Opportunities to Promote Human Rights and Democratic Norms Abroad: The Case of Canadian Foreign Policy Toward Cuba

The greater these opportunities, as is the case for bila…

Opportunities to promote human rights and democratic values abroad: The case of Canadian foreign policy toward Venezuela
This article examines Canadian foreign policy toward Venezuela, as a litmus test of Ottawa’s promise to project a consistently strong voice for the protection of human rights and the advancement of democratic values in the world. The case is made that Canada is more likely to gear up to an assertive approach if there is a perception that there is an opportunity for democratization in the country, and for policymakers in Ottawa, if there is an opp…

The rise and fall of revolutionary passions in El Salvador: Some lessons for the study of radical political movements
The Romantic Liberalism of Octavio Paz
My aim in this article is to contribute to a better appreciation of Octavio Paz's political thought, and to highlight how Paz's work is useful to improve our understanding of some of the fundamental dilemmas of contemporary Western societies. Ido this by examining Paz's unorthodox and syncretic use of two largely opposing intellectual traditions, liberalism and romanticism. I conclude with some remarks on how art can inspire fresh thinking about …

Foreign assistance and the market‐place of peacemaking: Lessons from El Salvador
The overall success of the Salvadorean transition suggests two working hypotheses that might prove useful for the analysis of other countries. First, it suggests that political transition and democratization could be analysed as a political market‐place, where all kinds of resources are traded. With Chapultepec, no political actor won or lost: everyone went home with something. Exchanging resources of violence against other resources is arguably …

This essay will attempt to portray the political orientation of the Central American University "José Simeón Cañas" (UCA), and to explore a general proposition concerning the political role of universities in a context of political transition. The case is made that this orientation could be explained by mo factors: 1) by the university's dispositions toward politics and political participation, and 2) by the nature of the university's socio-econo…
