Calling, Permission, and Fulfillment
Drawing on examples from in-depth interviews with 49 women, in this article we aim to open up a discursive space for women and health professionals to begin to explore the phenomenon of the interembodied experience of breastfeeding. Although acknowledging that social dimensions partially constitute the lived body, we further the view that the lived body's understanding is embedded in contexts far more complex than those that can be represented by…
Lifeworld-led healthcare is more than patient-led care
Being With That
In this keynote presentation, I consider one way of articulating a more intimate relationship between the findings of qualitative research and the practice of care in health-related contexts. Drawing on the writings of Gadamer and Gendlin, I consider the kind of understanding that might be particularly relevant to everyday practice. I call this 'embodied relational understanding.' I further pursue the question of how the findings of qualitative r…
Embodied interpretation
This article contributes to a growing trend in articulating an aesthetic phenomenology that exercises more evocative and poetic forms of writing. Our task is to give ontological weight to our common humanity, thereby facilitating experiences of recognition and 'homecoming'. This developing trend could benefit from Gendlin's philosophy of the body and his practice of 'focusing', which finds words that carry forward the textural dimensions of exper…
Pursuing Both Breadth and Depth in Qualitative Research
In this article, the authors explore the methodological and epistemological tensions between breadth and depth with reference to a study into the experience of caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease. They consider the benefits and limitations of each of two phases of the study: a generic qualitative study of narrative breadth and a descriptive phenomenological study of lifeworld depth into selected phenomena. The article concludes with a…
The Status of Method
Many elements of qualitative research are shared between the variety of approaches, and often the overlap of epistemology, ethics and procedures encourages a generic and flexible view of this type of inquiry. This article argues that there is an essential tension between flexibility on the one hand, and consistency and coherence on the other. Such tension may encourage qualitative researchers to consider the intentions and philosophical underpinn…
