Involuntary migration, context of reception, and social mobility
In this study, we examine the Vietnamese population of the United States as a case study in the integration of a refugee group in a host country. We approach this case in three parts. We first offer a brief review of Vietnamese refugee resettlement in the US and the making of a new ethnic community. We then provide a quantitative analysis of socioeconomic mobility among Vietnamese refugees using American Community Survey data from 1980 to 2015 an…
Reinforcing Polarizations
In recent years more legal immigrants have entered the United States through marriage than through any other means, while the desirability of current levels and types of immigration has been a matter of controversy. The United States has also been engaged in a heated public debate over the nature and definition of marriage for the past decade. The source of this debate has been the question of whether the legal status of marriage should be extend…

Social Capital as Process
In this study, we suggest that the difficulty in defining, locating, and measuring social capital is at core a philosophical confusion of language, and not just a consequence of excessively wide application. The term 'capital' refers to resources for investment. Financial capital consists of specific quantities of assets. Human capital, a metaphorical extension of financial capital, also consists of specific quantities of assets, in the form of s…
Many Petals of the Lotus
Toronto sustains a remarkable variety of distinct Buddhist communities. Over sixty Buddhist temples and associations represent a diversity of ethnic, national, and linguistic identities. Here, for the first time, is a rigorous, richly detailed, comparative examination of several groups within five Asian Buddhist communities: Japanese-Canadian, Tibetan, Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Chinese. With an intimate knowledge of her subject matter, McLellan …
Family Pressure and the Educational Experience of the Daughters of Vietnamese Refugees
This article explores the issue of gender role changes encountered by young Vietnamese‐American women based on our ethnographic study of Versailles Village, a low‐income ethnic community in New Orleans, US. We examine how female Vietnamese high school students deal with conflicts between the stubborn traditionalism of parents and the desire for personal liberty of American‐reared children and how they negotiate gender roles at home and in school …

Endogamy among Louisiana Cajuns
This study employs 1990 U.S. Census data to examine possible sources of a high rate of endogamy among Louisiana Cajuns. It suggests that a continuing high level of in-group marriage in this ethnicity is surprising, given the group's long residence in the U.S., the ethnic diversity of southwestern Louisiana, and the group's cultural assimilation. The study uses logistic regression to examine predictors of endogamous or exogamous marriage patterns …

The Socioeconomic Position of the Louisiana Creoles
This study suggests that the class-caste argument associated with the Wilson- Willie debate provides a fundamental line of division in theories of racial and ethnic stratification; it maintains that groups that combine minority statuses may be affected by both class and caste influences, a situation of "double jeopardy". and it describes French-speaking Louisiana blacks, or Creoles, as a group that combines minority statuses. Analysis of Census d…
Family Structure, Schoolmates, and Racial Inequalities in School Achievement
This study examines the influence of schoolmate family structure, racial concentration, and socioeconomic status on the academic achievement of individual African American and White students. The data are drawn from the 1990 test results of 18,000 10th graders who took the Louisiana Graduation Exit Examination. The study finds that being surrounded by schoolmates from female-headed families had the second largest negative association with the aca…
