Demolition, Documentary and the Politics of Minjian on Contemporary Chinese Screens
China's transformation in the reform era has been most immediately experienced by many ordinary citizens in spatial terms, as existing urban communities have been dispersed and their environments levelled, to be replaced by 'spaces of flows' that prioritise speed, mobility and circulation. A wide range of Chinese films have represented this experience from the perspective of existing urban communities. This article argues that in certain 'unoffic…
Media, Mobilities and Identity in East and Southeast Asia
This collection for Cultural Studies Review aims to address gaps in existing mobilities scholarship from two perspectives. First, while several articles here discuss the physical movement of various groups, the overarching focus is the complex interplay of mobile technologies and information on the one hand, and rapidly evolving formations of culture and identity on the other. Geographically, our focus is outside the 'global north', on a region t…

Analyses how independent documentaries are forging a new public sphere in today's ChinaSince the turn of the twenty-first century there has been an explosion in Chinese independent documentary filmmaking. But how are we to understand this vibrant burst of activity? Are these films brave expressions of dissidence, or do they point to a more complex attempt to expand the terms of public discourse in the People's Republic? This timely study is based …

Monitoring of lightning from the April–May 2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption using a very low frequency lightning location network
The April–May 2010 explosive eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland produced a tephra plume extending to an altitude of over 9 km. During many, but not all, of the periods of significant volcanic activity the plume was sufficiently electrified to generate lightning. This lightning was located by the UK Met Office long-range lightning location network (ATDnet), operating in the very low frequency radio spectrum. An approximately linea…

The Archaeology of Fazzan
This book seeks to advance knowledge of human settlement and adaptation in the world's largest desert, the sahara. Previous studies focussed on the prehistoric phases but this study takes a wider historical and geographical perspective. It sets out to combine the results of several field campaigns, their histories and methodologies. We look at fieldwork, fortifications, funerary structures, irrigation, rock art and human occupation. The final sum…

Incidence and costs of incidental appendectomy as a preventive measure
Statewide hospital discharge data in South Carolina for the period 1979-81 were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the incidental appendectomy performed as a preventive measure. The occurrence of incidental appendectomy exceeded that of appendicitis treated by appendectomy, with population-based rates of 1.13/1,000 and 0.97/1,000 person-years, respectively. Over 64 per cent of appendicitis cases occurred in persons under 25 years of age while …

Influence of Triiodothyronine on Selective Attention in Man as Measured by the Visual Averaged Evoked Potential
Man is continually bombarded by stimuli. Some contain important information while others do not. By processing some stimuli and filtering out others, man selectively attends to his environment. It is possible to obtain an objective measure of attention directed toward a specific stimulus by measuring the averaged evoked potential (AEP) produced by that stimulus. The amplitude of the AEP is greater when the subject attends to a stimulus than when …
