Mapping the truth about mining
Conflicts over extractive projects often hinge on questions about which and whose knowledge counts, and whose realities and knowledges are ignored in decision-making. This has led scholars to scrutinize ‘corporate science’ and the ways in which mining corporations produce forms of ignorance through the deliberate distortion and manipulation of knowledge on the socio-environmental impacts of mining. In this article, I examine these dynamics throug…

The 'Church of the Poor and the Earth' in Latin American Mining Conflicts
Conflicts over large-scale mining in Latin America have received growing scholarly attention. Whereas this scholarship has provided very valuable insights into the anatomies of these conflicts, the role of religious ideas and actors has received scant attention. This is remarkable, since the largest church of Latin America, the Catholic Church, seems to be in the midst of an ecological reorientation and increasingly emphasizes its image of the 'C…

Large-scale Mining, Citizenship, and Development in Correa's Ecuador
Through a persuasive discourse on well-being and citizen "participation," Ecuador Estratégico, a government agency tasked with implementing buen vivir (good living) in regions of resource extraction, plays a pivotal role in justifying and legitimizing resource extraction locally. An examination of the practices and discourses of this state institution and of the responses of community members and the ways they negotiate citizenship in the context…
Minería a gran escala, pluralismo territorial y contención
Over the last decade, Ecuador has become a new frontier for large-scale mining expansion and this article aims to analyze the territorial transformations and contentious politics that are induced by this new capitalist activity. It therefore presents a case-study of Ecuador's first large-scale mining project, the Mirador copper mine in the Cordillera del Cóndor in the Amazon region. Using analytical insights from the current debates on territory,…
The ‘will to improve’ at the mining frontier
Debating Alternative Development at the Mining Frontier
In Ecuador, the recent introduction of mineral mining led to a conflictive debate on mining and development, particularly the concept of Buen Vivir (good living). This article examines the discourses on the mining–development nexus articulated in the conflict around the first large-scale mine of Ecuador, El Mirador. The findings indicate that although the conflict concerns tangible territorial transformations, it is also a struggle over meanings.…
