  • Violent conflict, capitalism and insurgent food sovereignty

Anil Prakash Sharma, Yukari Sekine et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2026

Historically, war-making and state-making have facilitated resource extraction and capital expansion through colonialism and global food regimes. Weaponization and financialization of food systems perpetuate rural vulnerability amidst violent conflicts, undermining food sovereignty. Yet, despite territorializing logic of state and capital, sovereignty can also emerge ‘from below’ in relational and decentralized ways in contexts of war through ins…

  • Self-Efficacy Is Associated with Health Behaviors Related To Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk Among Hispanic/Latinx and Somali Immigrants To the United States

Open Access•Brianna Tranby, Irene G Sia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2025

Self-efficacy theory proposes that confidence to engage in a health behavior is associated with engaging in that specific behavior. Most research examining self-efficacy has been conducted with white young adult populations. This cross-sectional analysis examined the association of self-efficacy (i.e., confidence) for healthy eating and physical activity in two immigrant communities. At enrollment into the Healthy Immigrant Community study, a cli…

Abby M Lohr, Yahye Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2025•References: 9

Rochester Healthy Community Partnership, a 20-year community based participatory research partnership, used photovoice to learn about Hispanic/Latino and Somali immigrants’ health concerns. Participants photographed their health-related priorities, reflected, developed policy recommendations, and shared photographs at a public event and rotating exhibit in 2024. More than 100 people attended the event (19 decision makers, 64 members of the public…

  • Rochester Healthy Community Partnership: Then and now

Open Access•Mark L Wieland, Maizam Alias et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Community-engaged research partnerships promote health equity through incorporation of regional contexts to inform partnership dynamics that shape research and interventions that reflect community voice and priorities. Long-term partnerships build trusted relationships and promote capacity building among community and academic partners, but there are many structural barriers to sustaining long-term partnerships. Here we describe lessons learned f…

  • Addressing Covid-19 inequities using bidirectional crisis and emergency risk communication and vaccine clinic interventions: A descriptive study

Open Access•Abby M Lohr, Kelao Neumbo et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

We found that participants viewed the CERC intervention for vaccination equity as an acceptable way to disseminate COVID-19-related information. Nearly all participants reported that the intervention convinced them to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. In our experience, community-engaged and community-based clinics are a successful way to administer vaccines to im/migrant communities during a pandemic

  • Rejecting the Ottomans, Revisiting the Mamluks: Historical Drama and Identity in Post-2013 Egypt

Yahye Ahmed, Claire Panetta•ARTICLE•Middle East Journal of Culture…•2023•References: 9

This article queries the sociopolitical implications of a wave of popular interest in the legacy of the Mamluk dynasty (1250–1517) in post-2013 Egypt. Although the era’s sultans have traditionally been derided in mainstream culture as tyrannical ‘foreign’ leaders, they have recently been reframed as the last nationalist rulers before the Ottoman invasion. This revised characterization underpins the newfound fascination with their socio-political …

  • Food as right, food as bribe: The politicization of food distribution in rural Egypt

Yahye Ahmed, Yasmine Moataz•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Development…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 22

Egypt’s extensive system of food subsidies has been subject to critique. While reviews focused on the system’s inefficiency, little attention has been given to how target beneficiaries in rural areas perceived food subsidy programs prior to the implementation of the 2014 food subsidy reform. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in the aftermath of the 2011 uprisings until 2014 in the village of Al-Ab`adiyya Wālī Mizār in Fayyūm, Egypt, and…

  • Transforming critical agrarian studies: Solidarity, scholar-activism and emancipatory agendas in and from the Global South

Diana Aguiar, Yahye Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2023•Cited by: 12•References: 96

This paper examines the challenges and opportunities faced by critical agrarian scholars in and from the Global South. We argue that despite the historical and structural limitations, the critical juncture of convergence of crises and renewed interest in agrarian political economies offers an opportunity for fostering a diverse research agenda that opens space for critical perspectives about, from and by the Global South, which is mostly absent i…

  • The Recruitment to Dissemination Continuum in Community-based Participatory Research

Ahmed A Mohamed, Jennifer L Ridgeway et al.•ARTICLE•Progress in community health…•2022•Cited by: 1

This study demonstrated the ways in which recruitment of marginalized populations to research studies and dissemination of study results can manifest as a continuum. This continuum is nurtured by trust, longitudinal relationships, and robust partnership dynamics. These factors fit well within an existing CBPR conceptual model

  • An Assessment of Health Priorities Among a Community Sample of Somali Adults

  • Social networks and obesity among Somali immigrants and refugees

    Open Access•Jane W Njeru, Mark L Wieland et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

In this community sample of Somali immigrants, distinct social networks are clustered by weight status, and social contacts and functional network characteristics are related to individuals' weight loss intentions. These factors should be considered in weight loss interventions and programs. A social network intervention targeting weight loss, within a community-based participatory research framework, is feasible in this vulnerable population
