  • The Headman, the Regent and the 'Long Walk to Freedom

Philip Bonner•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2019•Cited by: 1

This posthumously published article was completed by Philip Bonner (d.2017) in 2010 as a longer paper commissioned by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. To our knowledge, it has not been published, and we have edited it, with permission, into a suitable form for a journal article. This has involved shortening, reducing some of the extended historiographical discussion and cutting some of the informal writing. Bonner was initially asked to investigate…

Open Access•Philip Bonner, David Schalkwyk et al.•BOOK•Cambridge Companion to Nelson…•2014

Nelson Mandela was one of the most revered figures of our time. He committed himself to a compelling political cause, suffered a long prison sentence, and led his violent and divided country to a peaceful democratic transition. His legacy, however, is not uncontested: his decision to embark on an armed struggle in the 1960s, his solitary talks with apartheid officials in the 1980s, and the economic policies adopted during his presidency still spa…

  • History and the here and now

    Philip Bonner•ARTICLE•Social Dynamics•2013•Cited by: 1

This paper explores the lesser-known histories and present-day realities of small towns and non-metropolitan areas in the internal provinces of South Africa. It is different inasmuch as it focuses on transformations that have taken place at the local level, and where possible, generalises from these, rather than following the normal route taken by social scientists – at least from 1994, which has been to examine them from the top down. One featur…

  • Migration, Urbanization and Urban Social Movements in Twentieth Century India and South Africa

    Open Access•Philip Bonner, Philip L Bonner•ARTICLE•Studies in History•2004•Cited by: 3

This article compares patterns of urbanization and the forms assumed by urban social movements in twentieth-century India and South Africa. It highlights the prevalence and persistence of single male labour migration to and from the major industrial centres in both countries and seeks to identify their respective compulsions. It emphasises the importance of the white settler political project of segregation in South Africa in shaping patterns of …

  • The Great Migration' and 'The Greatest Trek: Some Reflections

Philip Bonner•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•2004•Cited by: 2

This article compares and contrasts paths, patterns and experiences of migration undertaken by blacks from the southern United States moving to northern cities, and by Africans from the South African countryside moving to the Witwatersrand. It suggests marked parallels between the migration of black share‐croppers from the American South in its latter stages and in the aftermath of the First World War and the migration of African labour tenants f…

  • Company town, company estate: Pilgrim's Rest, 1910-1932

    Philip Bonner, Karin A Shapiro•ARTICLE•Journal of Southern African Studies•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 7

This study of Pilgrim's Rest seeks to fill an historiographical gap by exploring labour relations on the periphery of the gold mining industry. The experience of Pilgrim's Rest presents a distinctive South African wrinkle to the international phenomenon of companies’ trying to order and control the lives of their employees outside of work. The dominant gold‐mining company in the eastern Transvaal, Transvaal Gold Mining Estates, faced intense comp…

This is the first full-length study of the political economy of one of the African states which were formed in the course of the nineteenth-century Zulu revolution. The early chapters examine the evolution of the Swazi state and the dynamics of its stratified systems, paying particular attention to the 'layering' of inequality through marriage and inheritance patterns, and the simultaneous integration of age regiments and the elaboration of a nat…

  • Factions and Fissions: Transvaal/Swazi Politics in the Mid-Nineteenth Century

    Open Access•Philip Bonner•ARTICLE•The Journal of African History•1978•Cited by: 3•References: 3

The writing of South African history has yet to catch up with many of the historiographical advances made north of the Limpopo. This is especially obvious in the tendency to view white and black states confronting one another in the pre-conquest era as irreconcilably hostile monolithic blocks. This essay attempts to examine the reality of that interaction by focusing on the eastern Transvaal republics and the Swazi in the mid-nineteenth century. …
