  • Agency Problems and the Configurations of the Colonial Economy

Open Access•Felipe Souza Melo, Diego De Cambraia Martins•ARTICLE•Itinerario•2026

Why did the Pombaline monopoly companies struggle to enforce their commercial privileges in colonial Brazil despite remaining profitable? This article reconsiders the history of the General Company of Grão-Pará and Maranhão (1755–1777) and the General Company of Pernambuco and Paraíba (1760–1780) by combining principal–agent theory with the economic history of Portuguese America. Rather than attributing the companies’ difficulties primarily to th…

  • Reassessing the productivity of enslavement on large-scale plantations and small farms in Brazilian cotton production ( c .1750– c. 1810)

Open Access•Felipe Souza Melo, Diego De Cambraia Martins•ARTICLE•Historical Research•2023

This article compares the two largest raw cotton regions in Brazil between the 1750s and the 1810s. Through the analysis of new data on cotton export records and parish records, we argue that the high pattern of ownership of enslaved people, together with the organization of labour, the specialization in cotton and the cultivation of short fibres, made enforced labour more productive in Maranhão. In turn, the low pattern of ownership of enslaved …

Open Access•Angelo Alves Carrara, Maximiliano M Menz et al.•ARTICLE•Revista de Historia Económica /…•2022•Cited by: 6•References: 8

While some authors defend the existence of a widespread economic crisis in Brazil during the 18 th century, motivated by the fall in the extraction of precious metals, others suggest that the colonial economy maintained a positive performance thanks to the growth of its domestic market. The main goal of this article is to challenge these two explanations, showing that different rhythms of development characterised Brazil's economy in each of its …

  • Hierarquias mercantis no Atlântico Português

    Felipe Souza Melo•THESIS•2019•Cited by: 1
