Human Sickness and Health—A Biocultural View. Corinne Shear Wood
Retinal pigmentation, visual acuity and brightness levels
This study investigates the hypothesis that the degree of retinal pigmentation in the human eye is adaptive as it relates to the maintenance of visual acuity in optically stressful environments, deserts and snowfields. Eighty‐four subjects were examined, an estimation of their degree of retinal pigmentation made by ophthalmoscopic examination, and their binocular visual acuity tested over ten levels of brightness. The general level of retinal pig…
New Evidence for a Late Introduction of Malaria into the New World [and Comments and Reply]
New evidence is offered to strengthen the case for a post-Conquest introduction of malaria into the New World. An investigation of human physiological factors influencing host selection by malaria vectors revealed a strong preference by Anopheles gambiae for human hosts with blood-group O. The unique, overwhelming group-O frequency present among indigenous American populations is seen as a result of mother-child ABO incompatibility effects operat…
Brain Damage and the Intellectual Defense of Inequality [and Comments and Reply]
Our purpose is to expose the complicity of the human sciences in perpetuating inequality and to make a start toward ending this complicity. The learned debate about the nature of inequality in class and ethnically stratified societies is a spurious controversy. All major positions, ranging from biological determinism associated with conservative ideologies to environmentalism linked with liberal politics, are actually rationalizations for the sta…
