Disaster Citizenship
What happens in the wake of disaster—of a massive explosion, a devastating urban fire? This is not a book about how we make sense of such catastrophes, as Western cultural commentators have tried to do at least since the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. Rather, it is a social and political history that explores popular, bottom-up and official, top-down responses to two Progressive-Era events: the Salem, Massachusetts, fire of 1914, which rendered thous…
Considering Capitalism in American Social Thought
Triumphant capitalism seems nowadays to be a fact of nature, requiring no name and admitting, as Margaret Thatcher famously put it, of “no alternative.” Neither American Capitalism nor Transcending Capitalism shrinks from “naming the system,” as perplexed New Leftists once struggled to do when trying to articulate their own alternative. But having named it, neither book takes as its primary task to define or fully describe that economic and socio…

What's on the worker's mind
Posing, living, and laboring as American workers, several 1920s reformist labor investigators sought to develop an alternative to Frederick Taylor's famous characterization of a typical manual laborer as mentally akin to an ox. Through their experiences as workers, they believed that they gained real if limited access to working-class pyschology. Accordingly, they presented views of the worker's mind that significantly loosened the strictures of …
The Jungle
Jack London proclaimed that Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle (1906), an anatomy of American immigrant working-class life set partly in Chicago's wretched and unsanitary packinghouses and their environs, might prove to be the Uncle Tom's Cabin of wage slavery. That it did not, according to Sinclair's own often-quoted analysis, stemmed from his inaccurate aim: his literary bombshell struck the public, not in the heart, but “in the stomach ” A nove…

Evolution and the Sabotaging of Karl Marx in America
It has been fifty years since Richard Hofstadter published his seminal book about influence of evolutionary theory upon American social thought.' Hofstadter wrote a good deal about socially conservative implications of what many Victorian evolutionists called the struggle for existence.-For example, Yale sociologist William Graham Sumner used Darwin to sacralize principles of laissez-faire economics. However, Hofstadter also considered appropriat…
