  • A Replication and Extension of Willer et al. (2013), Overdoing Gender

Open Access•Claire Gothreau, Nicu Haas•ARTICLE•Journal of Experimental Political…•2026

Do men respond to a masculinity threat by adopting more conservative political attitudes? A highly cited 2013 study by Willer et al. – drawing on substantial work in social psychology – argues in the affirmative, reasoning that endorsing conservative views allows men to reaffirm their gender identity. In two experiments with student convenience samples ( N total 100–110, N men 40–51), the authors find consistent evidence: inducing masculinity thr…

  • My History or Our History? Historical Revisionism and Entitlement to Lead

    Open Access•Nicu Haas, Emmy Lindstam•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 87

Ongoing, spirited debates from around the globe over statues, street names, symbols, and textbooks call for a greater understanding of the political effects of different historical representations. In this paper, we theorize that inclusive (exclusive) historical representations can increase (decrease) marginalized group members' perceived centrality to the nation, entitlement to speak on its behalf, and likelihood of becoming leaders. In an onlin…

  • The timing of communication and retaliation in bargaining

Open Access•Andrzej Baranski, Nicu Haas et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Psychology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 42

We conduct an experiment to investigate how the timing of communication affects bargaining outcomes and dynamics in a majoritarian, sequential bargaining game . Our data show that allowing for free-form written communication at the proposal-making stage leads to higher proposer power and minimum winning coalitions compared to when communication is possible at the voting stage only. Absent communication, outcomes fall in between both communication…

  • Pork versus Policy

Andrzej Baranski, Nicu Haas et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Politics•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 17

Pork-barrel politics has long attracted controversy; difficult to prove and vigorously denied by those accused of it, the practice is nevertheless defended by others who argue that pork facilitates compromise. We design a novel field-in-the-lab experiment to study how legislators bargain over pork and real-world policy. We first introduce a new incentivized method to measure subjects’ ideological peak preferences and attitudinal strength. Subject…

  • Be Explicit

    Open Access•Nicu Haas•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2022•References: 2

The misalignment of goals among researchers, external organizational partners (OPs), and study participants is thought to pose a challenge to the successful implementation of collaborative research projects. However, the goals of different collaborative team members almost never are elicited, making identification of misalignment and its potential consequences a difficult task. In this evaluation of a United Nations Nonviolent Communication Progr…

  • Through Their Own Eyes

Open Access•Nicu Haas, Aida Gureghian et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experimental Political…•2020•References: 2

COVID-19 is expected to radically alter higher education in the United States and to further limit the availability of tenure-track academic positions. How has the pandemic and its associated fallout affected doctoral students’ career aspirations and priorities? We investigate this question by comparing responses to a PhD career survey prior to and following significant developments in the pandemic. We find little evidence that the pandemic cause…

  • If They Endorse It, I Can't Trust It

Open Access•Nicu Haas, Nicholas Haas et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Political…•2020•Cited by: 14•References: 42

Civil wars are a greater source of violence than any other type of conflict, yet little is known about one of the key determinants of civil war peace settlement success: civilian support. We evaluate how a core component of nearly all peace settlements, leader endorsements, affects public support. We predict that individuals in conflict settings will view settlements endorsed by outgroup leaders as less trustworthy and that they will become less …

  • Does Political Affirmative Action Work, and for Whom? Theory and Evidence on India's Scheduled Areas

Open Access•Saad Gulzar, Nicu Haas et al.•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•2020•Cited by: 18•References: 33

Does political affirmative action undermine or promote development? We present the first systematic analysis of Scheduled Areas in India, home to 100 million citizens, where local political office is reserved for the historically disadvantaged Scheduled Tribes. A newly constructed dataset of 217,000 villages allows us to probe conflicting hypotheses on the implementation of the world's largest workfare program, the National Rural Employment Guara…

  • Bilateral “molarization” of teeth erupted in the region of the second mandibular premolars

Open Access•Joseph Hermel, Jacob Yardeni et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1968•References: 1

A very large tooth, found in the region of the second mandibular premolar, in a subject, Jewish immigrant from Iraq, is in all likelihood an expression of a familial trait of disturbances in genesis of the shape of dental buds. The appearance of any primitive realization in this case can be conceivable and it was discussed
